Weigel’s, Bojangle’s, Popeyes proposed on South Illinois Avenue

Weigels Rezoning

The Oak Ridge Municipal Planning Commission will consider a rezoning for a Weigel’s on South Illinois Avenue during a Thursday evening meeting.

A Weigel’s gas station and convenience store could be built next to TNBank on South Illinois Avenue if city officials approve a project rezoning.

Meanwhile, two restaurants that serve chicken and other food have been proposed on South Illinois Avenue. Popeyes is replacing Wishbones on Illinois Avenue just south of Oak Ridge Turnpike, and a site plan has been approved for a Bojangle’s on property just south of the former Dean Stallings Ford, Community Development Director Kathryn Baldwin said Wednesday.

The Oak Ridge Municipal Planning Commission is scheduled to consider the rezoning for Weigel’s during a Thursday evening meeting. That meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building Courtroom.

Baldwin said the rezoning would allow a gas station and convenience store on the 1.5-acre parcel south of TNBank.

The land is owned by Shailesh Patel, who once proposed building a hotel there.

Baldwin said Popeyes is extensively renovating the interior of the former Wishbones restaurant.

I didn’t ever try Wishbones. I think I’ve had both Popeyes and Bojangle’s. I am encouraged by the new business openings.

WHAT???? A gas station on the east side of Illinois. WOOHOO, I won’t have to hope I can make it to Solway anymore when I’m riding on fumes.

Good point, Ken. Right now, there is no gas station on South Illinois Avenue between the BP at Tulsa Road and Solway. I’ve wondered why for years.

CK-There is a weigels on the west end of OR. Their milk is always about 10 cents cheaper than the grocer.

Wishbones took a long long long time to serve up the food. I think they had too few people hired to help. I am REALLY looking forward to Popeyes and I hope they have their red beans and rice. Oooh, so good.

Oh, no! Not Bojangles…it’s too good. Their fried chicken is so delicious and so we can all expect to see our butts get a little bigger with these new improvements to the city.

When I lived in Virginia, Bojangles and Popeyes would always spring up right next to each other. I guess it’s only fitting that now that we’re slated for one that we’d get the other. 🙂

    No complaints!

Just what we need is more fast food chicken places!! The gas station will be welcome although it’s usually cheaper outside of Oak Ridge.
