Marion Janelle Hughes

Marion Janelle Hughes

Marion Hughes passed away Tuesday, July 24, at Golden Living-Windwood in Clinton after an extended illness.

Born November 11, 1917, in Shelbyville, she was the last surviving child of the late Arch and Minnie Halmontaler.

Marion and her family moved to Oak Ridge in 1947, when her husband came to work here. She was a resident of Oak Ridge until 1975, when she moved to Clinton.

She cared for numerous children both in Oak Ridge and Clinton and became affectionately known as “Granny Hughes,” which has been her endeared name for many years to her friends.

Marion was a member of Central Baptist Church in Oak Ridge and enjoyed being a part of the Go-Getters Senior Group until her health prevented her attending. She was a member of the Good News Sunday School Class.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Fred Hughes; her sister and brother-in-law, Aline and Carter George; her brother and sister-in-law, Guy and Louise Halmontaler; and her son-in-law, Charles Dunn.

She is survived by her daughter, Dolores Dunn of Knoxville; her grandsons, Dr. Michael Dunn of Tampa, Fla., Gregg and wife Amy Rae Dunn of Knoxville; great-grandsons, Oscar and Harry Dunn of Knoxville; niece and nephew, Karen and Kevin George of Nashville; and many special friends that were her extended family.

The family would like to extend their love and appreciation to the staff of nurses and caregivers at Golden Living-Windwood for their excellent care, compassion, and love given to Marion; to Wanda McElheny for her many visits; and to the special friends who have shown concern to her and the family through the Alzheimer’s journey. May God bless each of you.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 26, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Weatherford Mortuary. The funeral will begin at 3 p.m. with Rev. Glenn Ellis officiating. The burial will follow at Anderson Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial gifts to Central Baptist Church, 130 Providence Road.
