The woman wanted for an alleged Craigslist home rental scam in Claxton was killed Thursday morning in a traffic accident on Interstate 75 in Whitley County, Ky., according to WYSH Radio in Clinton.
Shannon Renee Leffew, a 37-year-old Clinton resident, had been wanted on 25 counts by the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department.
She was a passenger in a 1995 Toyota Thursday morning at around 11 a.m. on I-75 South near mile marker 1 when the driver apparently lost control and left the roadway, colliding with a pickup truck and camper trailer parked in the emergency lane, WYSH said.
Leffew and three others were taken to Jellico Community Hospital, where she was pronounced dead, the radio station said. Kentucky authorities say that her relationship with the other people in the car was not immediately clear and that she was the only one in the vehicle not properly restrained.
The alleged Craigslist scam involved a rental home on West Wolf Valley Road. Anderson County Sheriff Paul White said more than a dozen victims responded to a Craigslist ad about renting the home, and they reportedly left deposits with a person they thought owned the home, but didn’t.
White said the victims discovered the scam when some of them tried to move into the house.
Two other suspects in the case were arrested Tuesday in Cocke County, including Leffew’s 17-year-old son, while she eluded capture.
Leffew had been charged with 12 counts of aggravated burglary, seven counts of misdemeanor theft, five counts of felony theft, and one count of criminal conspiracy, White said.
