A North Carolina man who graduated from Clinton High School in 1987 died Sunday in an airplane crash in South Dakota.
Lt. Col. Paul Mikeal of Mooresville, N.C., was killed while fighting massive wildfires when an Air National Guard C-130 crashed in the mountains of South Dakota, WYSH Radio in Clinton reported.
Several other crew members were injured in the wreck, and some suffered serious injuries, WYSH said.
The plane crashed while fighting a six-and-a-half-square-mile fire in the Black Hills of South Dakota.
Mikeal’s mother still lives in Clinton, and Clinton Police officers and members of the University of Tennessee Air Force ROTC told her of her son’s death Monday morning, WYSH said.
The radio station said Mikeal was 42, married with two children, and had been deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq.
