Police: Man says he was a victim of random gunshot

A 21-year-old Oak Ridge man admitted to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg on Monday told police he was the victim of a random gun shot in the woods behind Wadsworth Place, authorities said.

The victim, who lives on Wadsworth Place, was admitted to the Emergency Department at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge on Monday night.

The incident was reported to have occurred between 8 and 8:20 p.m. Monday, Oak Ridge Police Department Officer Christopher G. Luethge said in a report.

Oily rags might have started a fire in a basement at a home on Wadsworth Place on Monday afternoon, Oak Ridge Fire Chief Darryl Kerley said.

He said residents who were home when the fire started at about 3:40 p.m. Monday smelled and saw smoke, and they initially thought it might have been from an electrical box in the basement.

But he said the fire, one of three in Oak Ridge on Monday, might have been started instead by cleaning rags that were improperly stored downstairs and spontaneously combusted.
