Lung cancer to be discussed at Health Night on the Town

There is no sure way to know if you’re going to get lung cancer, but certain risk factors can make you more likely to get lung cancer than another person. Smoking causes 80 percent of lung cancer deaths; however, other factors can increase your risk and even non-smokers can get the disease.

Learn more about lung cancer during Methodist Medical Center’s Health Night on the Town lecture on Tuesday, August 25, at 7 p.m. in the Ridge Conference Room of the hospital, which is at 990 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Cigarettes bring together more than 50 chemicals that are known to cause cancer. In fact, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women in the United States and worldwide.

In the U.S., lung cancer is responsible for 29 percent of cancer deaths, more than those from breast cancer, colon cancer, and prostate cancer combined. Statistically, lung cancer caused by smoking is responsible for nearly 135,000 U.S. deaths per year.
