Son of U-2 pilot shot down over Soviet Union at AMSE on Saturday

Gary Powers, a U-2 pilot for the Central Intelligence Agency, was shot down over the Soviet Union in 1960 and was held as a prisoner there for two years. His son, Frances Gary Powers Jr., will visit the American Museum of Science and Energy tonight (Saturday, October 27) to discuss his father’s experiences and sign copies of his new book, “Letters from a Soviet Prison,” a collection of his father’s letters from prison.

The film, “Bridge of Spies,” depicts this story, and it was shown at AMSE on Friday evening.

Today’s event starts with the book signing at 5:30 p.m. at the new AMSE, which is at 115 East Main Street in Oak Ridge. The lecture is scheduled to start at 6 p.m. in the AMSE Auditorium. [Read more…]

Retired CIA officer to discuss Middle East foreign policy

Tony Jordan

Tony Jordan, retired CIA Senior Intelligence Service officer, will discuss what he sees as failures in U.S. foreign policy in the Middle East during Lunch with the League on Tuesday, a press release said.

Jordan has extensive experience as an operations manager in the Middle East and South Asia, a press release said.

The Tuesday, October 7, program will start at noon in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church’s new location at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike. [Read more…]

Bruce Held, the acting administrator of the National Nuclear Security Administration and acting undersecretary for nuclear security, visited the Y-12 National Security Complex on Thursday.

Held toured the site and conducted an “all hands” meeting at the site’s New Hope Center to talk to federal and contractor employees.

Held is a retired clandestine operations officer of the Central Intelligence Agency, a former national security adviser to President Bill Clinton, former counterintelligence chief at Sandia National Laboratories, and former director of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Intelligence and Counterintelligence.
