ORHS Boys Basketball Boosters has fundraising golf tournament Aug. 17

Oak Ridge and Karns Basketball

An Aug. 17 golf tournament at Centennial Golf Course in Oak Ridge will benefit the 2013-2014 boys basketball team at Oak Ridge High School. (File photo)

The Oak Ridge High School Boys Basketball Boosters invite you to participate in their 16th annual golf tournament, a press release said.

This year’s event—a four-man scramble format—will be held Aug. 17 at Centennial Golf Course in Oak Ridge. The tournament will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. Sponsored by BSN Sports, the tournament costs $75 per person. [Read more…]

Jaguars eliminate Wildcats from state tournament

The Southwind Jaguars opened up a wide lead in the fourth quarter and eliminated the Oak Ridge Wildcats from the state basketball tournament in a quarterfinal game on Wednesday.

The final score at the Murphy Center in Murfreesboro was 69-47.

Wear pink, get in free at Roane State basketball games on Feb. 16

Fans who wear pink to Roane State Community College basketball games on Saturday, Feb. 16, will be admitted free and will be supporting a nationwide effort to raise awareness about breast cancer.

The Roane State women play Cleveland State at 5 p.m. in the gym on the college’s main campus in Harriman. The men’s game follows at 7 p.m.

Former Roane State basketball star honored for Hall of Fame induction

Bernadette Mattox

Bernadette Mattox, a star basketball player at Roane State Community College in the 1970s who has had a ground-breaking and successful coaching career, will be honored at the college’s Jan. 26 basketball games for her induction into the Tennessee Community College Athletic Association Hall of Fame.

Roane State’s women play Dyersburg State at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 26, and the men follow at 4 p.m. Games are held in the gym at the college’s Roane County campus in Harriman. Mattox will be honored at halftime of the men’s game.

Last-minute steal seals deal for Karns

Oak Ridge and Karns Basketball

The Oak Ridge Wildcats lost a close, high-scoring game to the Karns Beavers in Oak Ridge on Friday night. Karns won 84-81.

It was a high-scoring game with many lead changes, but a last-minute steal by Karns essentially sealed the deal.

The Oak Ridge Wildcats were ahead of the Karns Beavers 81-80 with less than a minute to play at Wildcat Arena on Friday night.

But shortly after missing two free throws and with about 30 seconds remaining, Karns (17-4, 9-2) stole the ball from Oak Ridge (17-4, 7-4) and scored.

Roane State Community College sophomore basketball player Jassmine Franklin has signed to play for Carson-Newman College next season.

Franklin, a 6-1 post from Marion County High School in Lexington, Ky., is the team’s fourth-leading scorer (6.7 points per game) and leading rebounder (6.8 rebounds per game). She is also second on the team in assists per game (2.1).
