The restrooms at the Oak Ridge Public Library will be renovated starting February 1.
The renovations are expected to be completed by June 1.
The renovations will result in increased accessibility under Americans with Disabilities Act, cleaner restrooms, and new fixtures, a press release said.
[Read more…]Breakfast with the Legislators begins this year on Monday.
The monthly breakfasts are scheduled each year while the Tennessee General Assembly is in session. They are hosted by the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge, and this is the 36th year they have had the breakfasts.
Monday’s breakfast is scheduled from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. January 23 in the Social Room of the Oak Ridge Civic Center at 1401 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Harry “Whitey” Hitchcock, who represented part of Oak Ridge in three terms on Anderson County Commission, died January 10. A former teacher, he was 76.
Hitchcock served on Anderson County Commission from 2006 to 2018. He represented District 6 in Oak Ridge, including the City Hall, Robertsville, and West Hills voting precincts.
At the request of Commissioner Catherine Denenberg, the Anderson County Commission had a moment of silence in honor of Hitchcock during their monthly meeting on Tuesday, January 17.
Later in the meeting, Anderson County Commissioner Tracy Wandell said he appreciated Hitchcock’s friendship and leadership.
“He did a lot of things in a short amount of time,” Wandell said. “He always did things that made our county better.”
[Read more…]Representatives of the Anderson County Emergency Rescue Squad will be guest speakers when the Anderson County Democratic Women’s Club meets at 6 p.m. Monday, January 23, at Shoney’s Restaurant, 204 South Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge.
Chief Terry Allen and Paula Daniel from the Rescue Squad will speak about the nonprofit, volunteer-run emergency response organization that serves Anderson County, a press release said. There will be maintenance work on the public warning siren system in Oak Ridge during the week of January 23, and people in the area might occasionally hear audio from individual sirens around the Y-12 National Security Complex.
The sirens are strategically placed to notify the public in the unlikely event of an on-site emergency that has impacts beyond the site boundary.
In case of an actual emergency on the Oak Ridge Reservation, sirens will sound simultaneously with the standard tone.

While UT-Battelle searches for a new director at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, it has appointed former chief operating officer Jeff Smith to serve as interim lab director.
Smith retired in April 2021. He had been ORNL’s chief operating officer when UT-Battelle began managing ORNL for the U.S. Department of Energy in 2000, and he served in the position until his retirement.
To help find the next lab director, UT-Battelle has hired executive search firm Russell Reynolds Associates.
The company will help find a successor to Thomas Zacharia, who retired at the end of 2022 after a 35-year career at ORNL, including five years as director.

President Joe Biden will appoint Merlin Theodore of Oak Ridge National Laboratory to the National Science Board, the White House said in an announcement last week.
Theodore is the first full-time researcher from a national laboratory to serve on the National Science Board, the governing board for the National Science Foundation, according to ORNL.
“Merlin’s appointment to the National Science Board is indicative of her accomplishments as a researcher, her contributions to national missions, and her advocacy for women and minorities in science,” said interim ORNL Director Jeff Smith.
Theodore is one of eight new board members. The National Science Board is made up of 25 members appointed by the president, and they serve six-year terms.
The National Science Board pursues the goals and function of the NSF, including the duty to “recommend and encourage the pursuit of national policies for the promotion of research and education in science and engineering,” according to the White House news release.
