Answer Financial Inc. is relocating from this building on Union Valley Road to Bridgewater Road in West Knoxville.

Answer Financial’s decision to relocate its local sales center to Knoxville, taking several hundred jobs, will have a significant impact on Oak Ridge, but another tenant could be interested in moving into the office building on Union Valley Road, business leaders said.

One of the largest auto and home insurance agencies in the United States, Answer Financial broke ground on its new 32,775-square-foot facility on Bridgewater Road in Knoxville last week. It could be open by early fall and serve as the company’s primary sales center. It will be able to house more than 400 employees, including more than 100 new employees the company plans to hire in the next two years.

Estimates of the jobs lost in Oak Ridge ranged from about 200 to 300, and officials said Answer Financial workers earned $40,000 to $50,000 or more.

Open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday for Pugh and Co.

The Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce has organized a Tuesday morning open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony for Pugh and Co., certified public accountants and public advisers.

The ceremony is scheduled from 9-10 a.m. Tuesday at Pugh and Co., which is in the Jackson Plaza, Suite A-404, 800 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

City Council to discuss electronic signs, economic development

Business owners with electronic signs, including Toney Stevens of Rivers Total Car Care in Oak Ridge, objected to a letter they received in December asking them to fix sign ordinance code violations. Since then, the violation notices have been canceled, and the Oak Ridge City Council will discuss the electronic sign ordinance in a work session tonight.

The Oak Ridge City Council will review the city’s electronic reader board sign ordinance during a work session at 7 p.m. today.

The meeting will also include a presentation and report on the city’s economic development programs and possible changes in how the city supports new jobs and companies, improves retail opportunities, and enhances housing improvements.

Changes to the city’s electronic sign ordinance were proposed late last year, but they were pulled from a December meeting of the Oak Ridge Municipal Planning Commission agenda after a backlash from business owners.

The property at Woodland Town Center where an Aldi grocery store could open by September near Panera Bread and Aubrey’s between South Illinois and South Purdue avenues.

The new grocery store that could open on South Illinois Avenue by September could be an Aldi, a developer said Friday.

The 15,800-square-foot store would be on 1.6 acres at Woodland Town Center, where the new Aubrey’s and relocated Panera Bread opened in October. It would be across from those two restaurants, on the other side of a new roadway called Woodland Terrace East.

Planning commissioners consider rezonings for grocery, store

A grocery story and commercial store are being considered at two small sites on South Illinois Avenue and Oak Ridge Turnpike.

The unnamed grocery store could be built on a 2.3-acre parcel at the new Woodland Town Center, where Aubrey’s and Panera Bread recently opened. The store would be across from the two restaurants, on the other side of a new roadway called Woodland Terrace East.

IDB, YPOR elect new officers

The Oak Ridge Industrial Development Board and Young Professionals of Oak Ridge have elected new officers.

During its regular meeting last week, the IDB elected David E. Wilson as chair, Harold D. Osucha as vice chair, and Harold E. Trapp as secretary and treasurer. Former chair Bill Biloski did not seek re-appointment to the board in December.

Meanwhile, the YPOR elected Jimmy Landmesser Jr. as president, Zabrina Minor as president-elect, Caitlin Watson as treasurer, and Sam Jones as secretary.

The first home was moved Thursday morning from Iris Circle and Robin Lane in central Oak Ridge to make way for a new Kroger Marketplace shopping center near Oak Ridge Turnpike and Illinois Avenue.

The first home was moved Thursday morning to make way for a new Kroger Marketplace shopping center near Oak Ridge Turnpike and Illinois Avenue.

Ten more houses on Robin Lane and Iris Circle are ready to move, and a total of 25 have to be relocated, said Micheal Mills of M&M House Movers in Harrogate. Mills hopes to move them all by March 1.

The small, brown home moved Thursday was taken to a 13-acre farm on Blair Road in Roane County, Mills said. The man who owns the farm has purchased two of the Oak Ridge homes for his family to use on the farm.

The 11-mile drive was expected to take about three hours. The man driving the moving truck Thursday, Sonny Asher of New Way House Moving in Harrogate, which is working with M&M, said each home weighs about 20 to 30 tons.

NNSA: New Y-12, Pantex contractor expects to offer jobs to most employees

The company that won the contract to manage and operate the Y-12 National Security Complex in Oak Ridge and the Pantex Plant near Amarillo, Texas, expects to offer jobs to more than 95 percent of the current employees, federal officials said Tuesday.

The number could be affected by voluntary retirements and other departures, National Nuclear Security Administration officials said during a Tuesday afternoon teleconference.

The company that won the five-year contract, Consolidated Nuclear Security LLC, or CNS, is a team that includes Bechtel National Inc. and Lockheed Martin Services Inc. It also includes ATK Launch Systems Inc. and SOC LLC.

They’ve agreed to sell their current church to make way for a new shopping center, and on Sunday, members of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church voted overwhelmingly to try to move to the east end of town.

The congregation voted 131-2 to buy a 4.6-acre site in front of the Joe L. Evins Federal Building, home of the U.S. Department of Energy Oak Ridge Office. The plot is beside Summit Medical on Laboratory Road.

But they haven’t closed on the deal yet, the church’s minister, Rev. Jake B. Morrill, said Monday morning. In a press release Monday afternoon, members of the Church’s Relocation Steering Committee said the due diligence process is not complete, and a closing date hasn’t been set.

Assuming the deal is completed, the next step would be to design a building. The church said it is working with an architect “to begin a congregation-wide process to design a new church using a sustainable, green design for the new facility and preservation of as much of the existing park-like setting of the parcel as possible.”

Church members expect to be in their new home by Thanksgiving 2014.

Pittsburgh Paints is moving from Melton Lake Drive to Fairbanks Road, developer and commercial landlord Rick Chinn said Friday.

The new store will be located where the former Atomic City Sports Bar used to be.

Chinn said the new Pittsburgh Paints store has a Feb. 1 occupancy date.
