Six long-time advocates for peace and justice, including two women from Oak Ridge, will be honored with the 2017 Peacemaker Awards in Knoxville on Saturday, March 11, a press release said.
Since 1999, the Peacemaker Awards, sponsored by the Oak Ridge Environmental Peace Alliance, have recognized people who have distinguished themselves by speaking, acting, and working for social justice in East Tennessee, the press release said.
This year’s honorees are Shigeko Uppuluri and Marese Nephew of Oak Ridge, Caroline Best of Maryville, and MaryAnne McNutt, Judy Ross, and Sarah Scott of Knoxville.
The Saturday ceremony will start at 7 p.m. at St. James Episcopal Church at 1101 North Broadway in Knoxville.
“We are pleased to recognize and honor the persistent, dedicated, unwavering commitment these women have demonstrated throughout their lives to the work of peace and nonviolence,” said Ralph Hutchison, coordinator of OREPA. “Their work has been public; they have not always been popular; but after all is said and done, they stand as champions of peace and justice, promoting understanding and nonviolence in word and deed.”
The celebration will serve as a fundraiser for OREPA’s Next Generation Leadership Development Fund; suggested donations of $30 for adults and $5 for students/children will be accepted (but not required) at the door.
The evening will include hors d’ouevres and music by The Emancipators along with the presentation of the Peacemaker Awards. Everyone is welcome, the press release said.
