English classes for speakers of other languages will be offered free of charge at Grace Lutheran Church in Oak Ridge beginning Wednesday.

The classes will be held on Wednesday evenings at 6 p.m. A key orientation and assessment session is scheduled from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 7. It’s required and will place students at appropriate class levels, a press release said.

Grace Lutheran is participating in the classes as a member of the newly formed ESOL Community and Clinch Valley Collaborative, the release said.

The Grace ESOL classes will include an hour of conversation practice from 6 to 7 p.m., followed by an hour of English instruction from 7 to 8 p.m. Conversation partners and English instructors will be provided primarily by Grace Lutheran volunteers on Wednesdays. In addition, child care for small children and homework help for school-aged children (for children from about 6-10 years old) will be offered free of charge during these Wednesday sessions.

Grace Lutheran Church is located at 131 W. Gettysburg Ave.; the church backs up to the cafeteria end of Woodland Elementary School and a joint pavilion.

Coming the following week at the same location, Clinch Valley Adult Education ESOL classes will be offered on Tuesday and Thursday evenings, also at no charge. These classes will begin on Tuesday, Jan. 14. Hours for Clinch Valley classes to be announced. All students, for both Grace and Clinch Valley classes, will be placed at the appropriate level after completing the orientation and assessment session of Tuesday, Jan. 7, at the church.

Meanwhile, daytime ESOL classes will be offered at TORCH, in Trinity Center at 320 Robertsville Road in Oak Ridge. The TORCH daytime classes will begin the week following an assessment session scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Free child care will be provided by Grace Lutheran for the Jan. 7 evening assessment session and for Tuesday and Thursday evening classes starting Jan. 14.
