Two local Memorial Day ceremonies will pay tribute to U.S. military personnel.
The first ceremony will be held at the Veterans Memorial in front of the Anderson County Courthouse in Clinton at 10 a.m. Monday. Tennessee Sen. Randy McNally, an Oak Ridge Republican, will be the guest speaker.
The second ceremony will feature the Oak Ridge Community Band in a free performance at 7 p.m. Monday at A.K. Bissell Park.
Band member Janice Mitchell, a guest vocalist, will sing several patriotic pieces including Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.,” a medley of World War II songs in “The Homefront,” and “Armed Forces Salute” featuring “The Caisson Song,” “Semper Paratus,” “The Marines’ Hymn,” “The U.S. Air Force,” and “Anchors Aweigh.”
Another guest performer, band member Chris Sharpe, will be playing a trombone solo to “Variations on Barnacle Bill, the Sailor,” followed by “Lassus Trombone” featuring the band’s entire trombone section.
The band will also perform Henry Mancini’s “Baby Elephant Walk,” the popular World War II song “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” and some of Hoagy Carmichael’s most famous songs, such as “Stardust,” “Lazy River,” and more.
The Oak Ridge Community Band is directed by Dale Pendley, and it rehearses every Thursday evening. Interested area musicians who would like to join the band for the July 4 concert can call (865) 483-3044 for more information.
