A research scientist at Oak Ridge National Laboratory on Tuesday will discuss the expected impacts of climate change on extreme weather and cities.

Melissa Allen-Dumas is a research scientist in the Computational Sciences and Engineering Division of Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Her talk at Lunch with the League is scheduled from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesday at the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike. Those who attend can bring a lunch or purchase a boxed lunch. Coffee and tea will be served. The presentation will begin at noon, a press release said.

Melissa Allen-Dumas earned a master’s degree in environmental engineering from the University of Tennessee. Then, through the ORNL-affiliated Bredesen Center for Interdisciplinary Research and Graduate Education, she earned a doctorate in energy science and engineering. She has been connected to ORNL ever since, landing an internship and then a postdoctoral fellowship before signing on as a research scientist in 2017. Her expertise includes global modeling and analysis of atmospheric species transport, statistical and dynamical downscaling of various climate model output, analysis of direct and indirect effects of climate change on electricity demand, and on other national and civic critical
infrastructures, the press release said.

On Tuesday, Allen-Dumas will discuss expected global changes in extreme weather events due to climate change, how climate change may affect people locally in cities, what cities can do to adapt to climate change, and how cities can work toward limiting greenhouse gas emissions that lead to climate change.

Lunch with the League is hosted by the League of Women Voters of Oak Ridge.

More information will be added as it becomes available.
