The Oak Ridge Heritage and Preservation Association is having a Museum Appreciation Day for the American Museum of Science and Energy on Thursday, May 11.

The Museum Appreciation Day is is from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, May 11, at AMSE, which is at 300 South Tulane Avenue in Oak Ridge.

The Museum Appreciation Day is being held in place of the ORHPA’s regular monthly meeting normally, which is in the evening on the second Thursday of each month.

“The ORHPA encourages all its members and the public to come out and thank the AMSE staff for decades of excellent work, creating a museum that is a top destination for visitors to Oak Ridge,” a press release said. “While visiting, you’ll have a chance to give comments on what the AMSE means to you.”

The ORHPA has also announced a work party to be held on Friday, May 12, and Saturday, May 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. both days, at the organization’s building, the Midtown Community Center on the Oak Ridge Turnpike (traffic light #11). The work party is sponsored by the Y-12 Day of Volunteering, with materials paid for by the Y-12 National Security Complex, the press release said.

“All are welcome, even if you only have a short time to spend,” the release said. “Tasks include painting, landscaping, weeding, and trimming. Bring a garden tool or two and help out knowing you are helping preserve an original and historic Oak Ridge building.”

The Oak Ridge Heritage and Preservation Association (ORHPA) is a nonprofit historical society founded in 1999 to preserve and educate the public about Oak Ridge’s unique and rich technical and cultural history, and to work to preserve selected historical buildings of the World War II city and nuclear installations, the press release said.
