Basketball: Clinton girls finish as runner-up in Christmas tournament

CLINTON—The Clinton Lady Dragons finished as runner-up in the Don W. Lockard Christmas Invitational basketball tournament last week.

Clinton (4-10, 2-3 District 3-AAA) was overwhelmed by Cumberland Gap in the girls’ championship game. The Lady Panthers took a 34-2 halftime lead on their way to a 57-17 triumph at Clinton High School on Wednesday.

The Lady Panthers (6-5, 1-2 District 2-Class AA) also defeated the Lady Dragons 71-37 earlier in the day.

Clinton was led by Kinley Martin with 11 points in the championship game. Ally Evans added four points, and Nikki Jones, Megan Childs, and Abbie Stinnett each had two.

Cumberland Gap was led by Hayli England with a game-high 12 points. Britney Cupp scored nine points, and Meredith Neely, Hayley Wilson, and Hannah Heath all had eight. Brook McMichael added seven for the Lady Panthers.

Also Wednesday, the Central High School girls (3-15, 2-4 District 3-AAA) lost to Oakdale (5-10, 0-3 District 4-A) 57-22 in the girls’ consolation game.

Clinton beat Oakdale 52-27 in the tournament on Monday, and the Lady Dragons defeated Central 67-33 on Tuesday.

The Clinton boys also finished as runner-up in the basketball tournament.
