Four people were injured and one of them was flown to a hospital by a medical helicopter after a two-vehicle crash caused an SUV to roll at the intersection of Manhattan and North Purdue avenues on Saturday afternoon, authorities said.

The crash behind Food City was reported at about 2:45 p.m. Saturday. It took emergency workers about 30 minutes to remove a passenger trapped in the back seat of the GMC Envoy that rolled onto its top. The other vehicle was a Ford F150 pickup truck.

Three ambulances responded to the scene. So did the Oak Ridge Police Department and Oak Ridge Fire Department. A University of Tennessee Lifestar medical helicopter picked up one patient at Methodist Medical Center and flew that person to the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

The cause of the crash wasn’t immediately available. Neither were the names and the conditions of the patients.

More information will be added as it becomes available.

This is a general comment and not specifically related to the crash we covered Saturday. We’ve covered three crashes in the past three days, all three of them rollovers. And there have been two more crashes we didn’t cover, including a bad collision on Harriman Highway on Friday evening and another with injuries at New York Avenue and Oak Ridge Turnpike on Thursday night:

“There have been five crashes that I know of that resulted in injuries and/or rollovers in the past three days in the Oak Ridge and Oliver Springs area. Four of them resulted in injuries while three resulted in rollovers. Rescuers had to extricate or help remove people in three of them. We don’t have information on the causes of all five of the crashes, but in general, to help prevent more collisions, we encourage everyone to please remember to drive safely.”

Slow down folks. You’ll live longer and increase the probability that you and your loved ones will reach your destination safely.

John, thank you for your comments and reporting on these unfortunate incidents. I am not qualified to pass judgment on the cause of these traffic accidents however I would imagine it may have something to do with distracted driving and/or excessive speed.
The cause of the accident with injury at New York Avenue and the Turnpike should be easy enough to determine. Just check the traffic camera tape. Thanks again………. .

      Joe,

I don’t have specific info on the New York-Turnpike crash yet, but may have more tomorrow. I’ll try to post something when I do.

      Thank you,

      John

A rollover on N. Purdue and Manhattan? That’s a 25 mph zone. I wish there were an effective way to enforce traffic laws without having to raise taxes to pay for more law-enforcement personnel.

Hi, Mark. I also wondered about a rollover on what’s essentially a residential street.

I’ve been working on getting more follow-up information, but the closings this week have made that difficult. I’ll try to let you know when we have more information.

      Thank you,

      John
