The Oak Ridge Police Department has partnered with Nixle to implement its Community Notification System to alert residents in real time for localized emergency situations and relevant community advisories.

As a resident, there are several simple ways to register:

  • Text your zip code to 888777 from your mobile phone, or
  • Go to http://www.oakridgetn.gov/department/ORPD/Home and sign up via the Nixle widget.

Once registered, you will receive a confirmation text to your mobile device. You may also customize your alert settings by going to www.nixle.com and creating a user profile.

“ORPD is proud to partner with Nixle to provide timely and convenient alert notifications to Oak Ridge residents,” a press release said.

The system also provides a “Text-A-Tip” service for residents to report information about criminal activity. Along with other programs such as Raids Online, a Facebook page, and a Twitter account, Nixle encourages improved, appropriate and transparent communication between ORPD and the public, the release said.

“ORPD will continue to use social media to disseminate knowledge to residents and those who follow ORPD activity on Twitter and Facebook to more proactively inform the public in real time,” Oak Ridge Police Chief Jim Akagi said.

The release said alerts may be targeted geographically, allowing residents to receive localized, relevant alerts from ORPD. Nixle Alerts can be sent via text, email, the Web, social media, and the Nixle mobile app in an instant.

The release said Nixle has partnered with National Law Enforcement Telecommunications System for unmatched data security, as well as the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the National Blue Alert Network, and Google for unmatched reach and two-way information exchange.
