Planning commissioners consider rezonings for grocery, store

A grocery story and commercial store are being considered at two small sites on South Illinois Avenue and Oak Ridge Turnpike.

The unnamed grocery store could be built on a 2.3-acre parcel at the new Woodland Town Center, where Aubrey’s and Panera Bread recently opened. The store would be across from the two restaurants, on the other side of a new roadway called Woodland Terrace East.

The Oak Ridge Municipal Planning Commission will consider a rezoning and preliminary planned unit master plan for that development during a meeting early this evening.

Planning commissioners will also consider a rezoning for an unnamed commercial store on a 1.16-acre plot that is part of a larger parcel across from the intersection of Oak Ridge Turnpike and West Lincoln Road, Oak Ridge Senior Planner Kahla Gentry said.

The Planning Commission meeting starts at 5:30 p.m. in the Municipal Building Courtroom.

All of this is very good news, however, the grocery store would be a better fit for the folks on either the west or east side of town. Center city already has three grocery stores plus there’s the Food Lion for the folks on Emory Valley rd area. I know there’s a UGO on the west end but that’s a place I don’t recommend to anyone. It’s time to think of the people who have to go out of their way to shop.

It’s not the far east end, but Aldi once proposed building a store where the Dollar General is now, at the corner of Oak Ridge Turnpike and Florida Avenue.

The new Kroger store at Oak Ridge Turnpike and Illinois Avenue will be closer to the west end.

I don’t know exactly what is planned yet, but there is a commercial development possible just west of Chuck’s Car Care Center on Oak Ridge Turnpike on the west end of town.

I would like to see more retail development on the west end too.

I’ll let you know as soon as I hear anything about the plans for the small lot just west of Chuck’s Car Care.
