The Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church has a free community meal on Friday, and everyone is invited, a press release said.
It’s a Stone Soup Ministry free community meal. They are held the last Friday of each month in the church’s Social Hall. Food for the meal is provided by the ORUUC congregation and financial support from Oak Ridge community members.
The Stone Soup Ministry name is derived from the Stone Soup Fable, a medieval tale in which a hungry stranger came upon a small village.
“Having no food he put water and a few stones in a large pot to boil,” a press release said. “The villagers, who were suffering from a meager harvest, each contribute a bit of food, a carrot, a potato, etc. In the end, the stranger and the villagers sit down to the meal together. In modern times the story is usually told as a lesson in cooperation.”
ORUUC members said they try to serve nutritious, homemade meals to guests at every Stone Soup meal.
“Tables are set with flower centerpieces and china and silverware,” team member Abbie Moore said. “We encourage our guests to stay a while after dinner to visit with each other and the team members. There are a lot of connections that are made, especially among guests who are experiencing loneliness in their lives.”
Friday’s menu includes homemade Beanie-Weenie soup, cornbread, cookies, and milk. Dine-in or take-out will be available from 5 to 6 p.m., the press release said.
The Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church is located at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike (traffic light number 11).
