An Oak Ridge engineer on Tuesday will discuss a proposal to use giant mirrors in space to produce power, reduce exposure from the sun’s rays, and lower temperatures on Earth.

Tetra Tech engineer Robert Kennedy III will be the speaker at this fall’s first “Lunch with the League” at noon Tuesday, a press release said.

Kennedy’s presentation is called “A New Reflection on Mirrors and Smoke.” It will discuss a proposal to use giant photovoltaic mirrors in space. Besides producing power and reducing solar exposure and lowering temperatures, the mirrors would reverse the frequency and severity of storms, and generate revenue for clean energy sales to pay for the project, a press release said.

It said Kennedy recently gave this lecture in Moscow at the Russian Academy of Sciences/Rosgidromet, that country’s national weather service. The paper has been chosen for submission to the United Nations-sponsored International Panel on Climate Change for the Fifth Report. It will also be published by the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The lecture was also presented at the joint American Society of Mechanical Engineers Energy Committee Colloquium II and the International Conference on Nuclear Engineering, where Kennedy was awarded the inaugural J.A. Falcon Medal, the release said.

“Lunch with the League” is open to the public, and it is held in the Social Hall of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church at 1500 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

There is no cost to attend, and reservations are not needed. Box lunches will be available starting at 11:45 a.m. on a first-come basis for $7, or you may bring your own lunch, the release said. Coffee and tea are provided.
