Oak Ridge Community Band has July 4 concert

The Oak Ridge Community Band will present its annual Independence Day concert on Wednesday, July 4, at Alvin K. Bissell Park.

The concert is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. The concert is free, and it will be followed by the Oak Ridge fireworks show.

“Because the concert and fireworks traditionally attract large crowds, the public is encouraged to come early for good seating,” a press release said. “Bring chairs or blankets and plan to enjoy an exciting evening of music and fireworks celebrating the 242nd anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.” [Read more…]

Community Band Concert is April 2 at ORHS

On Sunday afternoon April 2, the Oak Ridge Wind Ensemble/Community Band will present its last concert of the 2016-2017 “Exploring Our Roots in Wind Band Music” series. The “Music of North America” performance will begin at 3:30 p.m. in the Oak Ridge High School Performing Arts Center at 1450 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

The April 2 concert promises to be an exceptionally entertaining show featuring music by outstanding American composers such as Gershwin, Leroy Anderson, John Phillip Sousa, Aaron Copland, Leonard Bernstein, Henry Fillmore, and others presenting a variety of selections ranging from dixieland, classical, gospel, jazz, and cajun two-step to marches, show tunes, and light pop, a press release said.

The Community Band is also pleased to present trumpet soloist Tim Michaels, vocal soloist Deidre Ford, and the band’s own Dixieland ensemble with trombonist Don Batchelor, clarinetist Deidre Ford, trumpet player Tim Ford, tuba player Tim Powers, and percussionist Cindy Redd, the press release said. An excellent way to usher out a wet, dreary January is by making plans to attend the entertaining “Music of Small Ensembles” Showcase Concert presented by the Oak Ridge Community Band/Wind Ensemble on Sunday afternoon, January 29. This performance will begin at 3:30 p.m., and it will be held in the sanctuary of the First Baptist Church, which is at 1101 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

The Sunday concert will feature band members and area musicians in small groups showcasing their talents with an array of musical selections including classical, jazz, blues, swing, show tunes, and novelty pieces.

On the January 29 program will be the Secret City Tuba-Euphonium Quartet with euphonium players John Caughman and Bill Bell and tuba players Tim Powers and Joe Williams performing John Caughman’s arrangement of “Antiphonal Alleluia,” Reinhold Gliere’s “Russian Sailors Dance,” and Leroy Anderson’s “Bugler’s Holiday.” [Read more…]

Oak Ridge National Laboratory on Friday hosted a visit by Petr Gandalovič, ambassador of The Czech Republic.

The ambassador toured ORNL’s High Flux Isotope Reactor and facilities for advanced reactor materials development and testing. He met with ORNL Director Thom Mason and held discussions with lab staff on topics including fluoride salt-cooled high-temperature reactors and the Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors.
