Help launch Roane State’s new golf program at June 4 fundraiser, Oak Ridge County Club

Posted at 2:14 pm May 8, 2018

Roane State Community College will bring back men’s golf and add women’s golf for the Fall 2018 season.

The effort is led by volunteer Chris Griffin of Oak Ridge, who played golf for Roane State in the late 1970s. Griffin will also serve as golf coach for the 2018-19 academic year.

Griffin has organized a golf tournament to raise funds for the new teams. The tournament will be held on Monday, June 4 at 2 p.m. at Oak Ridge Country Club.

The tournament will feature a four-person SWAT format and costs $600 per team (one handicapped division). The entry fee includes range balls, green fees and cart, on-course refreshments, and lunch.
Business sponsorships starting at $100 are also available through the Roane State Foundation.

“Coach Eddie Liskovec was the men’s golf coach during my career at Roane State and was instrumental in ensuring our collegiate experience was a positive one. I hope I can provide the same leadership to these upcoming 2018 student athletes as was provided for me and my teammates while at Roane State,” Griffin said.

CROSSVILLE—These athletes are truly the nation’s top guns.

The Roane State Community College Shooting Sports Team won the national championship among community colleges in a competition that measures marksmanship with shotguns.

It was a quick march to the top for the team. The Roane State squad came into existence three years ago and placed third nationwide then. Last year, Roane State’s sharpshooters captured second place.

A reception for the team will be held Wednesday, November 15, at 5 p.m. CST at Roane State Cumberland County campus, 2567 Cook Road in Crossville.

To win nationally, “It takes a lot of hard work and dedication as well as a lot of years of experience in practice and competition,” said Kenneth Carey, the volunteer head coach. Assistant coaches are Kevin Hembree and James Wattenbarger. [Read more…]

ROCKWOOD—Five members of the Roane State Raiders basketball team recently took time off from studying for finals to become role models for some Roane Academy youth.

Squad members spent the afternoon of April 26 at the Roane Academy, a residential facility for adolescent males who have experienced complex trauma. Currently in the state child welfare system, the children have been exposed to multiple traumatic events—such as abuse, neglect, domestic violence, multiple losses—that can have substantial and lasting effects if left untreated.

Teresa Duncan, vice president of workforce development for the college, became familiar with Roane Academy through visits its residents have made to local athletic events as rewards for growth and change that shows in treatment progress and safe, healthy decisions. In response, she contacted Roane State Raiders Head Coach Randy Nesbit, requesting that the team spend some time with Roane Academy youth.

Raiders team members Grant Holt, Garrett Crandell, Blake Ervin, Tyler Thompson, and Ricky Shearman interacted with Roane Academy residents, from playing pickup basketball games to dunking exhibitions to simply talking with them. [Read more…]

Briar Mays said she started noticing it last September—her right leg and hip were hurting.

During warm-ups and workouts as a freshman member of the Roane State Community College women’s softball team, Briar said she had to use her arms to pull her legs up for some exercises.

Physical therapy was recommended and undertaken, but that didn’t help ease the pain.

Still, the 18-year-old former standout for Forrest High School’s softball team in tiny Chapel Hill, Tennessee, finished out last fall’s season for the Roane State squad, playing left field.

It was only after an MRI in January that Briar received the devastating news: she had cancer. [Read more…]
