Philip John “P.J.” Marlino, of Oak Ridge, died peacefully at his home on April 25, 2015. He was 99 years of age.
The sixth of nine children, P.J. was born on January 25, 1916, to Felice and Maria Marlino of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. He will be lovingly remembered as a warm and gentle family man and friend, and as a lifelong scholar who never tired of learning.
P.J. attended Pennsylvania State University for his bachelor’s degree, majoring in chemical engineering. After graduation, he worked at the Radford Army Ammunition Plant before moving to Oak Ridge in 1945 to work on the Manhattan Project at K-25. As an Oak Ridge pioneer, he was present at key historic events including the first tests of the atomic bomb.
In Oak Ridge, he met his wife of 63 years, Frances “Millie” Marlino. They married in 1951 and raised five children together. P.J. and Millie were truly devoted to each other until her death in August 2014.
