Christmas Sing-Along Concert in Oak Ridge on Sunday

The public is invited to attend the Oak Ridge Community Band’s Christmas Sing-Along Concert at 3:30 p.m. Sunday, December 14, at the First Baptist Church. This is a free concert, dress is casual, and there will be refreshments at the conclusion of the program, a press release said.

It said the audience will be given Christmas song books and will have the opportunity to sing familiar Christmas carols accompanied by the band.

In addition, the Community Band will perform several holiday tunes including a medley of Christmas carols in “Celebrate Christmas,” “A Christmas Flourish,” “Auld Lang Syne,” and the traditional holiday favorite “Sleigh Ride.” [Read more…]

Community Band has free Labor Day concert in A.K. Bissell Park

The Oak Ridge Community Band will perform its annual Labor Day concert on Monday, September 1, at 7 p.m. in A.K. Bissell Park.

This is a free event, and the public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets for outdoor seating, a press release said. Refreshments will be available for sale.

To help kick off the Community Band’s 2014-2015 subscription season of indoor concerts, the first 200 people attending the Labor Day Concert will be given free tickets to the band’s October 12 concert, which will be held at the Oak Ridge High School auditorium, the press release said. [Read more…]

The annual Independence Day celebration and fireworks display in Oak Ridge was Friday, July 4, at Alvin K. Bissell Park. The festivities started at 7:30 p.m. with a free concert by the Oak Ridge Community Band, and they ended with the fireworks display at 10 p.m.

It was the 70th anniversary of the Community Band’s first concert held on July 4, 1944.

The Oak Ridge Community Band has been rehearsing for the annual Independence Day concert, which will be held Friday, July 4, at 7:30 p.m. at A.K. Bissell Park behind the Civic Center.

“This is an especially big event for the Community Band because it is the 70th anniversary of the band’s very first concert performed on July 4, 1944,” a press release said.

There is no admission fee for this concert or for the city’s fireworks display held at the end of the concert program. However, donations to the Community Band will be accepted to help offset band expenses, the press release said. [Read more…]

The annual Independence Day celebration and fireworks display will take place in A.K. Bissell Park on Friday, July 4, with festivities starting at 7:30 p.m. and ending with the fireworks display at 10 p.m.

The Oak Ridge Community Band will kick off the evening at 7:30 p.m. with a free concert on the Performing Arts Pavilion stage. The Community Band’s performance traditionally draws a large crowd, so the public is encouraged to come early with lawn chairs or blankets to secure a good seat, a press release said. This year’s Independence Day concert marks the 70th anniversary of the Community Band’s first concert that was held on July 4, 1944.

The firework display will begin at 10 p.m. and will once again be accompanied by music played live onsite by 96.7 Merle FM, the Oak Ridge Convention and Visitors Bureau said in the press release. Radio host Jack Ryan will be broadcasting from the park beginning at 6 p.m. and will conclude with a patriotic medley customized for the city’s fireworks. The countdown to fireworks will begin at 9:30 p.m., giving listeners plenty of time to settle down, tune in, and enjoy the show, the release said. [Read more…]

‘Oak Ridge Has Talent’ fundraiser at Grove Theater on Friday

The Grove Theater will host a fundraising talent show on Friday that will feature 10 groups from Oak Ridge and East Tennessee.

The show, called “Oak Ridge Has Talent,” starts at 7 p.m. Friday. It will mark the kickoff of Friends of the Grove Theater, a new nonprofit organization dedicated to maintain the Historic Grove Theater as a performing arts center for the Oak Ridge area.

Representatives from Sound Company Children’s Youth Choir will perform along with ensembles from Oak Ridge Community Band, Oak Ridge Symphony, and dancers from the Oak Ridge Civic Ballet. Bands will include the Ridge City Ramblers, an Oak Ridge Bluegrass band; the MOOD, a classic rock band; and an Irish music session representing the Traditional Irish Arts of Knoxville. Miss East Tennessee Scholarship Talent winners will also perform, and a distinctive surprise from the Emory Valley Center is planned. Community Band concert on Sunday features late-20th century music

A concert by the Oak Ridge Community Band and Wind Ensemble on Sunday afternoon will feature late-20th century music.

The concert starts at 3:30 p.m. Sunday at the Grove Theater. It will focus mainly on selections composed in the last half of the 20th century, a press release said.

“The audience at the Feb. 23 concert is in for a special treat with two featured performances by five talented band musicians,” the release said. “Accompanied by the band, clarinetists Deidre Ford and John Snyder will be playing a duet ‘Concertpiece No. 2’ by Felix Mendelssohn, and trumpet players Tim Ford, Jim Lux, and Tim Michaels will be performing Don Jacoby’s ‘Carnival Variations.’ The public will not want to miss hearing these outstanding performances!” [Read more…]

The Oak Ridge Community Band and Wind Ensemble has a Christmas sing-along concert on Sunday.

The free concert is at 7 p.m. Sunday at the First Baptist Church at 1101 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

The concert will be held in the church sanctuary, dress is casual, and song books will be handed to the audience members to sing familiar Christmas carols along with the band, a press release said.

Another highlight of the concert will be several selections performed by the band including Leroy Anderson’s “Sleigh Ride,” Johann Bach’s “If Thou Be Near,” Gustav Holst’s “Christmas Day” featuring a medley of carols, and “The Little Drummer Boy” arranged by former Oak Ridge Community Band director Steve “Doc” Combs and former band member Glenn Bigelow. Community Band concert at Grove Theater to feature early 20th century music

The Oak Ridge Community Band/Wind Ensemble will present its next concert in the “Music for a Lifetime” series at 3:30 p.m. Nov. 24 at the historic Grove Theater in Oak Ridge.

The concert program will feature “Early 20th Century Music” with tunes from the Golden Age, the Roaring ’20s, the ’30s, and from the Big Band era. These will include some blues by W.C. Handy, some Gershwin from “Porgy and Bess,” and big band music: “A String of Pearls,” “Sophisticated Lady,” “Satin Doll,” and “Opus One.” Other songs on the program will be music from the “Grand Canyon Suite,” a John Philip Sousa march, and others. The Oak Ridge Community Band will present an “Early Music” Concert on Oct. 13 at Oak Ridge High School.

The concert starts at 3:30 p.m. in the ORHS Performing Arts Center at 1450 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

This concert is the first of six indoor concerts in the “Music for a Lifetime” series scheduled for October, November, December, January, February, and April. These concerts will take the audience from early compositions up to the 1890s, then continue through the 20th century featuring the roaring ’20s, Big Band era on through the Nifty Fifties, Swinging Sixties, Generation X, and ending with music representing the New Millenium.
