JMS Principal Phil Cox inducted into basketball hall of fame in Kentucky

Phil Cox, principal of Jefferson Middle School in Oak Ridge, has been inducted into the Kentucky High School Basketball Hall of Fame, according to the Middlesboro (Kentucky) Daily News.

The newspaper reported that Cox, a high school basketball legend, was one of 19 inductees in the 2017 class.

Cox was a standout at Loyall Elementary School, where he played for Hall of Fame member Billy Hicks, and he earned all-state honors by the time he was a junior at Cawood High School, where he averaged 35 points a game, the Daily News said. He was Mr. Basketball in Kentucky as a senior and was, at the time, the all-time leading scorer in Harlan County, with 2,401 points. [Read more…]

Civil War books author to speak at ORICL kickoff Sunday

A leading author of Civil War history books who was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize 11 years ago will speak here this month at the Fall Kickoff of the Oak Ridge Institute for Continued Learning.

The free kickoff will take place from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Pollard Auditorium. Fall catalogs of ORICL courses and trips, as well as refreshments, will be available.

At 4 p.m. Earl J. Hess, Stewart W. McClelland Chair in History at Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, will speak on “Appalachia as Seen by Union and Confederate Soldiers during the Civil War.” [Read more…]

Angela Loy felt stuck.

She had a stable job with good pay, but Loy wanted a change, a chance to follow her passion for caring for others.

That feeling led her to Roane State Community College, and now she is on her way to Lincoln Memorial University on a full tuition scholarship as the recipient of the 2013 Lincoln Memorial University transfer scholarship. [Read more…]

Sharing information related to the early years of Oak Ridge is all in a day’s work for Y-12 National Security Complex historian Ray Smith.

Recently, Smith’s flair for historical detail was incorporated in a permanent display on the main campus of Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tenn. Located in LMU’s new Math and Science Building, the display pays tribute to nuclear energy research and the subsequent creation of what is now the U.S. Department of Energy.
