By John Huotari Leave a Comment

The annual citywide leaf pickup program will begin Monday, November 22. The program is starting a week earlier in order to “pick up the influx of leaves that have recently fallen,” a press release said.

The pickup is coordinated by Waste Connections of Tennessee. Collection efforts will follow the proposed schedule as closely as possible, the press release said.

“Please note that the proposed schedule is a general guide and can vary considerably from the actual schedule due to weather conditions, resident participation, and the amount of leaves needed to be picked up,” the release said.

The following guidelines will help make the leaf pickup process easier for Waste Connections crews and home owners, the press release said:

Garbage has to be brought to curb starting July 1

Note: This story was last updated at 6:30 p.m.

With limited exceptions, garbage cans in Oak Ridge will have to be brought to the curb for the weekly pickup starting July 1, and there will be a $1.20 monthly fee increase for the waste disposal service.

The city’s previous 25-year contract is expiring, and the new contract will start July 1.

Unlike many cities, Oak Ridge has had a “backdoor pickup” garbage service for years, but that is ending. With that back door service, garbage would be picked up away from the curb—at a back door, for example.

Under the new contract, people with qualifying disabilities will still be eligible for backdoor garbage and recycling services. (More information is included below.)

As part of the contract change to curbside pickup, new large 95-gallon trash bins will be provided at no cost, a press release said.

Oak Ridge leaf pickup starts Monday

The Oak Ridge leaf pickup program starts Monday, November 23. City collection efforts will follow the accompanying schedule as closely as possible. The proposed schedule is a general guide and can vary considerably from the actual schedule due to the amount of leaves and weather conditions, a press release said.

“Residents have always been very cooperative and we ask for their continued cooperation this year by following a few guidelines,” the release said.

  • Residents should place their leaves near, but not beyond, the curb. Leaves must not to be placed on the sidewalk or in the street, parking spaces, or drainage ditches due to posing a pedestrian or traffic hazard and possibly clogging the storm drains. Hazards that are created by improperly placed leaves will be removed by the city at the resident’s expense.
  • Leaves must be free of tree branches and twigs as these can cause the leaf vacuums to clog. Because of their impact on production, leaf piles found to contain these items will not be picked up.
  • All leaves must be placed outside fenced areas. If there is no other location on your property to rake your leaves, then rake them to the end/side of your driveway. Leaves may be placed in plastic bags and will be picked up at the curb during the scheduled program.
  • Only leaves will be collected during this fall’s program. Citizens are reminded that the citywide household trash and brush pickup will be scheduled in April and May.

The leaf pick-up schedule can also be found on the City of Oak Ridge website at www.OakRidgeTN.gov. For more information, contact Waste Connections of Tennessee at (865) 482-3656.

The citywide leaf pickup program begins Monday, Nov. 19. The schedule is printed below.

Oak Ridge officials said workers will try to follow the schedule as closely as possible, but it is a general guide and pickup dates can vary considerably from the real schedule due to the amount of leaves and weather.

Here a few guidelines for the leaf pickup program:

  • Residents should place their leaves near, but not beyond, the curb. Leaves are not to be placed in the street due to possible clogging of storm drains and posing a traffic hazard. Hazards can be removed by the city at the resident’s cost.
  • Leaves should be free of tree branches and twigs as these can cause the leaf vacuums to clog. Because of their impact on production, leaf piles found to contain these items will not be picked up.
  • All leaves must be placed outside fenced areas. Leaves in plastic bags will also be picked up at the curb during the scheduled program.
  • Only leaves will be collected during this fall’s program. Residents are reminded that the leaf pickup program typically begins the Monday before Thanksgiving each year, while the citywide household trash and brush pickup programs are held during April and May.

For more information, contact Waste Connections of Tennessee at (865) 482-3656.

The leaf pickup schedule can also be found on the city’s website at www.oakridgetn.gov.
