New Neurofeedback Clinic offers ‘brain training’ to Oak Ridge

Everyone knows that working out at the gym, over time, leads to a healthier, stronger body. In recent years, research on neuroplasticity has shown that training your brain can similarly lead to a healthier, stronger brain. Now, Oak Ridge has a “gym” for the brain: BrainAble Neurofeedback and Coaching.

Training with Neurofeedback, toward the state of calm focus, is like learning meditation with the benefit of real-time, ongoing feedback, letting you know when and how much you are “in the zone.” Our brains generate different frequencies of electricity. Often, we get stuck in the habit of producing too much slow, or “Theta” waves—so we’re sluggish and spacey. Or, we might produce too much fast, or “Beta” waves—so we’re anxious and stressed. Neurofeedback helps us regulate our brains, to achieve a more balanced mix of frequencies. Research has shown neurofeedback to help counter the effects of ADHD, depression, addiction, PTSD, and several other conditions. Some people turn to neurofeedback not to treat deficits, but to attain excellence. A well-tuned brain can lead to higher functioning, generally. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church

The U.S. Supreme Court will soon rule on the constitutionality of same-sex marriage, and Tennessee residents and state government officials are waiting to see how the Court’s decision will affect the state’s policy. In the midst of the wait, Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church has begun making plans, a press release said.

“In keeping with our beliefs and to offer a sense of love and support to same-sex couples, ORUUC will offer free wedding services and a reception for same-sex couples as soon as the County Clerks’ offices are able to issue licenses,” ORUUC minister Reverend Jake Morrill said in the release. “Those who plan to marry should call the church office to request a time to speak with one of our ministers prior to the wedding day.”

“In the Book of Ruth, when Ruth tells Naomi, ‘Where you go, I will go; your people will be my people,’ people don’t get caught up with the gender,” said ORUUC Minister of Faith Formation Reverend Tandy Scheffler. “What they hear is love. What counts in this life is love. And at ORUUC, we are ready to bless public commitments of love between couples who’ve waited too long for the rights and honor denied to their families.” [Read more…]

ORUUC Easter Sunrise Service

Submitted

Twenty-two members of the Oak Ridge Unitarian Universalist Church held a sunrise service on Easter morning at the site of their new building at 809 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

While the building won’t be finished until this fall, members received permission from Hickory Construction to use the site for this special purpose, provided they each wore hard-hats. So, it was with a light spirit that the small group celebrated the in-breaking of a new light, of new life, and the resurrection of Jesus. [Read more…]

As one ordained to spread the good news of the unending power of love in this world, this week I celebrate the Supreme Court decisions on marriage equality and that the Defense of Marriage Act has been declared unconstitutional.

The faith I affirm challenges me to speak and act for justice for all who express their love in the commitment of marriage.  Support for marriage equality is in scriptures and traditions that proclaim overriding messages of love, justice, and inclusion of those on the margins of society.
