Nurse to discuss mental health issues among school-age children

A registered nurse who works for Anderson County Schools will discuss mental health issues among school-age children in Oak Ridge on Saturday.

The talk is hosted by the Grace Lutheran Mental Health Ministry. It’s title “Mental Health: Back to School Basics,” a free community program scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, August 4, in the church’s fellowship hall.

Kim Guinn, a registered nurse and director of the Project AWARE Initiative for Anderson County Schools, will discuss the current prevalence and status of mental health issues among school-age children and the correlation between adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) and mental health problems, a press release said. Grace Lutheran has guided gratitude meditation on Saturday

The Grace Lutheran Mental Health Ministry will host a guided gratitude meditation program on Saturday.

The meditation will be led by retired licensed clinical social worker and CONTACT volunteer Linda Doyle in the church fellowship hall.

The program is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. Saturday, December 9, at Grace Lutheran, which is at 131 West Gettysburg Avenue behind Woodland Elementary School in Oak Ridge.

The presentation is free and open to the community, and child care will be provided, a press release said.

It said the guided meditation will be ecumenical in nature and appropriate for people of all faiths. [Read more…]

Specialist to discuss the importance of sleep to good mental health

Everyone knows that not getting enough sleep at night can impact your energy level the next day, but do you know how much a lack of sleep can impact your mental well-being?

Dr. Paul Gurecki, certified sleep specialist, will discuss the role of sleep in good mental health on Saturday, April 23. The presentation will begin at 10:30 a.m. in the fellowship hall at Grace Lutheran Church, which is at 131 West Gettysburg Avenue in Oak Ridge.

Gurecki said he will also address the value of sleep hygiene and the difficulties that mental health issues, such as medications and depression, can add to sleep habits. A neurologist also specializing in psychiatry and sleep laboratory medicine, Gurecki holds certification in both neurology and sleep medicine from the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
