First United Methodist has Vacation Bible School this month

First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge will be hosting Vacation Bible School “Mighty Fortress” from June 19-22 (Monday-Thursday) from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Children from 4 years old through 5th graders are welcome. FUMC is located at 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

Taizé service planned at FUMC this evening

As part of the Lenten series, “Seeking God: Exploring Prayer, Scripture, and Faith,” this Sunday evening, March 26, First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge will host a meditative service of scripture, prayer, and song in the style of the Taizé community in France.

Taizé worship service involves sung and chanted prayers, meditation, periods of silence, liturgical readings, and icons. The style of prayer practiced at Taizé has attracted many worshipers from around the globe and from many different denominations. The prayers consist of short chants, repeated again and again. The words are sung over many times inviting the worshiper to experience prayer as a receiver, instead of a requester.

First United Methodist will simulcast Bible teacher, author on Sept. 13

Beth Moore Living Proof Simulcast

First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge will simulcast well-known Bible teacher and best-selling author Beth Moore live from Fort Wayne, Indiana, on September 13, for the Oak Ridge area.

An estimated 250,000 women around the world are expected to participate in this live Internet streaming event, which will feature Moore’s dynamic storytelling and passionate Bible teaching in a down-to-earth style that is relevant to women’s lives, a press release said.

Moore has authored dozens of Bible studies, books, and devotionals specifically for women for nearly two decades. Moore’s organization, Living Proof Ministries, is based out of Houston.

“We want to welcome all women in the Oak Ridge area, no matter your faith background, to this free simulcast,” said the Rev. Crystal Smith, associate pastor at First United Methodist Church. “We hope the day will bless you and strengthen your walk in faith, and that through this event, we’ll be a blessing to other women as well.” [Read more…]

Combined choirs to sing ‘Sunrise Mass’ Sunday

The combined choirs of First Presbyterian and First United Methodist churches will sing the “Sunrise Mass” by Norwegian composer Ola Gjeilo during a concert on Sunday, May 18, at 6:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church.

String players from the Knoxville Symphony Orchestra and FUMC’s Sandi Henry on piano will accompany the choirs. The 32-minute symphony mass will be performed in the second half of the concert.

The first half of the concert will include choral music by various composers, including “Ave Verum Corpus” by W.A. Mozart, Dan Forrest’s setting of John Wesley’s “Covenant Prayer,” and Mack Wilberg’s arrangement of Isaac Watts’ version of Psalm 23, as well as works by Kevin Siegfried, Philip R. Dietterich, and Stephen Paulus. [Read more…]

A service of lessons, carols at First United Methodist Church

Tis the Season! Tis the season when Christians prepare to celebrate the birth of Jesus, and what better way than through a traditional service of lessons and carols? Come to this festive service, comprised of the stories and songs of Christmas, on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 6:30 p.m. at First United Methodist Church at 1350 Oak Ridge Turnpike.

The Service of Lessons and Carols was first held on Christmas Eve 1918 at King’s College in Cambridge, England. Since then, it has been celebrated throughout the world, sometimes still on Christmas Eve, otherwise sometime during the season of Advent, the four Sundays leading up to Christmas. While the backbone of the service, the lessons, has remained virtually unchanged, there is much beautiful and moving Christmas music to choose from when organizing such a service. [Read more…]
