Three-part fiction writing workshop with award-winning Roane State professor starts Friday

Have you ever felt the urge to write, but stopped yourself because you were not sure how to start?

You can learn how to create, write, and publish a story through a special three-part workshop offered by Roane State Community College assistant English professor and award-winning writer Elizabeth Genovise.

Genovise will teach the workshop—Fiction Writing 101—in September at Roane State’s Oak Ridge campus at 701 Briarcliff Avenue. The sessions will be held on Fridays—September 7, September 14, and September 21—from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

The cost is $89 for all three sessions. The workshop is open to anyone.

“I’ve always wanted to have a community workshop to help writers of any experience level express their ideas,” Genovise said. “If you can dream, you can write fiction and experience the joy of creating a story. I am very excited about this workshop.” [Read more…]

There’s a “bit of the magical” in her new work of fiction, author and Roane State assistant professor Elizabeth Genovise says.

Genovise’s latest literary effort, what she describes “one very long ‘short’ story,” is titled “The Stone Pear.” It’s now available for pre-order from publisher Anchor & Plume Press in Louisiana.

It’s the coming-of-age story of a girl coming to grips with her mother’s fragile health while also becoming obsessed with a pair of migrant workers boarding at her parents’ farm.

Genovise, who has taught English composition and literature at Roane State since 2010, says “The Stone Pear” is an unusual departure from what she calls her “strictly realistic stories.” [Read more…]

A story by Roane State Community College assistant professor Elizabeth Genovise has been named a 2016 O. Henry Prize Story, among the nation’s most prestigious honors for short fiction.

Past winners include literary luminaries such as William Faulkner, John Updike, Flannery O’Connor, Alice Walker, and Truman Capote, a press release said. Genovise’s piece, “Irises,” was among 20 stories selected from thousands of works published in literary magazines.

“I honestly couldn’t believe it,” Genovise said of the moment she learned her story had been selected. “I re-read the letter 50 times thinking maybe it was an elaborate prank from a fellow writer.”

Genovise has taught English at Roane State for six years. She holds a bachelor’s degree in English from Hillsdale College, a master’s in English from McNeese State University, and a master of fine arts, or M.F.A., from McNeese State. [Read more…]
