An information session about Roane State Community College’s new two-year Associate of Applied Science in Chemical Engineering Technology will be held on Thursday, March 28, from 5:30-7 p.m. at the college’s Oak Ridge campus, which is at 701 Briarcliff Avenue.

Check-in will be held in the lobby of the Goff Health Sciences and Technology Building. The event is free and open to the public, a press release said.

Established with the assistance of UCOR, CNS, Tate and Lyle, and additional partners, Roane State’s chemical engineering technology program trains students to work as chemical operators. A chemical operator monitors, controls, and troubleshoots automated chemical processes. [Read more…]

Larry Kelly

Larry Kelly, manager of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge Office since July 2012, has died.

“Words cannot describe the sadness we feel with the passing of Larry,” said ORO Deputy Manager Kevin Hall. “The loss of our leader is heavy on our hearts, but it is the loss of a friend that leaves an emptiness that will be difficult to endure. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Rubenia, and daughter, Kristyn. Anyone who spent time with him knew the admiration he had in his wife, and the pride he took in his daughter.

“During his tenure, I was always impressed with Larry’s emphasis on our people and our mission. It was the driving force behind all of his decisions, and it led to a workforce that cared for him very deeply. He made a lasting impact on the Oak Ridge Office and each one of us personally.” [Read more…]

Eby seeks re-election to school board

Bob Eby has qualified to run for re-election in November for the Oak Ridge Board of Education.

Eby, who is now the board’s vice chairman, is seeking his fourth term, having first been elected in 1985, again in 1991, and most recently in 2009. This is the first time Eby has run as an incumbent.

Eby was board chairman for two terms between 1991-1995, a press release said. Eby is a product of the Oak Ridge Schools (class of 1970), as is his wife of 40 years, Jean (class of 1971), his daughter Elizabeth (1998), and son William (2001).

Jean Eby is a retired teacher from the Oak Ridge Schools, having taught band, music, and third and fourth grade in the district for more than 30 years, the press release said. Most of her teaching career was at Linden Elementary School.

Bob Eby is the director for technology and process engineering for USEC Inc., and he also serves as Oak Ridge site manager for the company. He has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Tennessee and completed The Executive Program from the Darden School of Business at the University of Virginia. He is active in the business community, currently serving on the board of directors for the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce, the East Tennessee Economic Council, and the KFI, an organization dedicated for the benefit of the Ronald McDonald House in Knoxville. ORNL’s Jubin receives Robert E. Wilson Award from AIChE

Robert Jubin

Robert Jubin of Oak Ridge National Laboratory has received the 2013 Robert E. Wilson Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, or AIChE.

The AIChE recognized Jubin’s contributions in the areas of nuclear fuel reprocessing and radioactive waste treatment, and his chemical engineering achievements in the nuclear industry.

Jubin works in ORNL’s Nuclear Security and Isotope Technology Division.
