Employees at Y-12 National Security Complex raised $13,759 for Anderson County Relay for Life, which raises money to help fight cancer.

American Cancer Society Relay for Life

The American Cancer Society’s Relay For Life of Oak Ridge is on Saturday, May 16, at Oak Ridge High School Track. The Relay is scheduled from 3 to 10 p.m.

Organizers are asking you to turn out and “help finish the fight against cancer.”

“This event celebrates cancer survivors, remembers those we have lost, and provides the community with an opportunity to unite and fight back against this disease,” a press release said. [Read more…]

Calling all divas! Get together your girlfriends, your daughters, your mothers, and grandmothers, and come out for a day of pampering!

We have all been touched by cancer in some way. Some have fought the battle personally, and others have watched loved ones and friends go through the fight.

The American Cancer Society is making great strides in finding a cure for this devastating disease. They have come a long way, but still have much to do. This is where you come in. Relay for Life kickoff scheduled for Thursday, Jan. 29

American Cancer Society Relay for Life

The kickoff for this year’s Relay for Life of Oak Ridge is scheduled for Thursday evening, January 29.

During the kickoff, volunteers and participants will launch fundraising efforts for 2015. The kickoff will be at the Holiday Inn Express at 114 Tulsa Road from 5:30-7 p.m. January 29.

National Cancer Survivors Day is an annual, worldwide celebration of life where cancer survivors unite to show the world what life after cancer looks like. On Sunday, June 1, life after cancer looked like a warm summer day resplendent in sunshine. It sounded like old-fashioned mountain music being carried on a gentle Tennessee breeze. It tasted like a bowl full of ice cream topped with chocolate and cookies and sprinkles…and a bit of whipped cream for good measure. On Sunday, June 1, life after cancer looked beautiful whether it was still a little weak, still healing a scar, still re-growing hair, or whether it was an old friend that had come many years before, but never looses its sweetness.

Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge honored these cancer survivors, their family, and friends by holding Survivor Sundae, an ice cream social celebrating National Cancer Survivor Day on Sunday, June 1. Nearly 100 people gathered to enjoy the free event, make ice cream sundaes, connect with other survivors and cancer support organizations, and listen to music by the Mt. LeConte Jug Band, which was sponsored by the Cooperative Agreement of Labor and Management, also known as CALM.

“Sometimes people have a negative idea of what life after cancer looks like,” said Kim Maes, coordinator of the Hospitality Houses at Methodist and event organizer. “But the reality is that more people are living longer and having better quality lives after cancer than ever before. Survivors are showing us that life after cancer can be meaningful, exciting, and filled with joy.” [Read more…]

Relay For Life kicks off with Survivors Lap on Friday

Relay For Life of Oak Ridge will kick off with a special Survivors Lap on Friday. It’s a moving experience honoring those who have defeated cancer, a press release said.

Survivors will join together to walk the opening lap, unified in victory and hope, while the rest of the event’s participants surround the track to cheer them on. This empowering celebration is just a small piece of the special experience of Relay For Life, the release said.

Relay For Life is a unique grassroots fundraising event in which individuals and teams of participants in more than 6,100 communities nationwide walk around a track overnight to celebrate the lives of those who have faced cancer, remember loved ones lost, and commit to fight back against the disease. The money raised through Relay For Life supports the efforts of the American Cancer Society to create a world with less cancer and more birthdays.

The Survivors Lap starts at 6 p.m. Friday at Oak Ridge High School. Relay for Life continues until midnight at Ben Martin Track at ORHS. [Read more…]

Basketball tournament to benefit Cancer Society

On Saturday Aug. 24, a 3-on-3 basketball tournament will be held in Oak Ridge to benefit the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Oak Ridge. The tournament will be held at the Oak Ridge Civic Center with the first game to be played at 8:30 a.m.

There are three divisions: Competitive, Non-Competitive, and Women’s, and the registration fee is $60 per team ($20 per person). Each participant will receive a Relay for Life T-shirt.

There will also be a three-point contest at the conclusion of the 3-on-3 tournament and you can participate in that for a $5 donation entry fee. For more information or to reserve a spot for your team today, contact Kenneth Herring at (865) 310-2664.

Relay for Life moved indoors tonight, ends at midnight due to forecast

Relay for Life will be held indoors at the Oak Ridge High School tonight due to the risk of bad weather, the American Cancer Society said.

“We will be in the corridor and the B Gym,” representative Kayla Shelby said in a statement Thursday. She said participants should enter through the doors they would use to go to the arena, and the event will be modified, ending at midnight.

Catch the Leprechaun 5K at Melton Lake Greenway on Saturday

The American Cancer Society Catch the Leprechaun 5K starts at 8 a.m. Saturday at the Oak Ridge waterfront.

It is an Irish-themed 5k, and participants are encouraged come adorned in green, a press release said. It’s a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.

The course will follow Melton Lake Drive and Melton Lake greenway. One lane of Melton Lake Drive will be closed from 8-8:30 a.m. on Saturday morning.

Catch the Leprechaun 5K moves to Melton Lake Park

This year’s Catch the Leprechaun 5K, a fundraiser for the American Cancer Society, has moved to Melton Lake Park, organizers said.

The 5K is scheduled for 8 a.m. Saturday, March 9. The race course will follow Melton Lake Drive and greenway, a press release said.

On Feb. 9, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life of Oak Ridge will officially get under way as event volunteers and participants gather at Lincoln’s Sports Grille for a kickoff rally to launch their fundraising efforts for the year.

The rally will feature speakers who have benefitted from the funds raised at relay and will honor cancer survivors.

This also will be an opportunity to register a team and get in the relay spirit for the overnight event to be held on Friday, June 7, at Oak Ridge High School. [Read more…]

Relay for Life Survivors

Cancer survivors walk the first lap Friday evening during the annual all-night Relay for Life at Oak Ridge High School.

More than 500 survivors, family, friends, and supporters walked in a cancer-fighting fundraiser at Oak Ridge High School this past weekend.

Organizers of the annual all-night Relay for Life hoped to raise $80,000 and had already raised $55,000, said Kayla Shelby, an American Cancer Society employee who helped volunteers organize the event.
