Peggy J. Murphy

Peggy J. Murphy, better known as “P.J.”, age 68, of Clinton, passed away at her residence in Clinton on Saturday, June 1.

P.J. was a highly respected deputy sheriff for 16 years at the Anderson County Sheriff’s Department and was the first female officer hired for the Clinton Police Department. She was an avid University of Tennessee football fan.

Peggy is preceded in death by her grandmother, Beatrice Pyle; father, Henry Wallace; brother, Frank Wallace; aunts, Katy Childs, Pauline Beeler, Dorothy Phillips, and Margaret Hulsey; and uncle, Claude Pyle. [Read more…]

Estelle Mundy Holcombe

Estelle M. Holcombe, local business woman of Solway Community in Knox County, died June 3 at Tennova Residential Hospice in Halls.

Born Oct. 20, 1919, in Abbeville County, Abbeville, S.C., she was the daughter of the late George and Elliott Mundy. She moved to Columbia, S.C., at an early age and attended Columbia Community College.

She married in 1937 to her late husband, Jolly B. (Sam) Holcombe Sr., who she accompanied to Oak Ridge in 1943. During the 1940s and 1950s, she was well-known in the Oak Ridge area as the Avon Lady. She and her husband opened Solway Hardware in 1955, where they worked up to their retirement in 1968. [Read more…]

Kenney Lawrence Bean Sr.

Rev. Kenneth L. Bean, born Feb. 14, 1947, age 66, of Lake City, went to be home with his Heavenly Father on Sunday, June 2, at Tennova Hospice in Halls.

He was called to preach in 1985, pastored five churches, and had a radio broadcast at WYSH and open church at Clinton Towers for two years. Rev. Bean was a member and deacon at Pine Ridge Baptist Church for 13 years.

He worked for Y-12 in Oak Ridge for 44 years where he retired.

He was highly respected and known as an expert in rabbit hunting in which he had written many articles and short stories for “The Rabbit Hunting” magazine. [Read more…]

Litton Daugherty

Litton Daugherty, age 86, a resident of Oliver Springs, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 2, at his home.

Mr. Daugherty was born Oct. 9, 1926, in Devonia, Tenn. During his early adulthood, he moved to Oliver Springs, where he has continued to live.

Litton served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II. While serving, he received several medals, citations, ribbons, and awards, including the WWII Victory Medal.

Before his retirement in August of 1988, he was employed as an ironworker and he was a member of the Ironworker Local # 384. He previously worked as a coal miner in the New River area coal mines. [Read more…]

Richard Weldon

Richard Weldon, age 93, of Clinton, passed away early Saturday, May 25, at his residence in Clinton.

Richard was a member of Greenway Baptist Church. He worked for Y-12 for 12 years and drove a Greyhound bus before starting his own business, Weldon’s Quality Nursery, which he owned and operated for 32 years. Richard enjoyed working outdoors, fishing, gardening, and being with his grandkids.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 44 years, Erna Mae Weldon; parents, Lewis and Jenny Weldon; brothers, Robert, Bud, Howard, and Leo Weldon; sisters, Cleo Weldon and Jessie Hall; and brother–in-law Mickey Phillips. [Read more…]

Brodie Lee Reynolds, infant son of Beau Reynolds and Jessica Green of Harriman, passed away Saturday, June 1, at the Children’s Hospital in Knoxville.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Randy Lee Holt.

In addition to his parents, Brodie is survived by his maternal grandparents, Daniel and Belinda Green of Portland, Ore.; by his paternal grandmother, Valerie Holt of Harriman; and by uncles, Charles and Gerald Reynolds. [Read more…]

Louise Tuttle Haney, age 88, a resident of the Batley Community in Anderson County, passed away Friday, May 31, at her home.

Mrs. Haney was born Sept. 13, 1924, in Coal Creek, Tenn., which is now Lake City. She had lived in the Batley Community most of her life.

She was a faithful Christian who loved the Lord, and she was a member of the Batley Baptist Church. She also loved her family and she was a mother, a grandmother, and a great-grandmother.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Murphy Tuttle and Retha Mae Tuttle McKamey; by her husband, Emmett Haney; by sons, Alfred, Billy, and Glen Haney; by a daughter, Betty Nelson; by a granddaughter, Tyler Brown; by son-in-laws, Roger Brown and Sam Nelson; and by a daughter-in-law, Vera Haney. Terence Lee Braden, age 37, a resident of the Braden Flat Community in Anderson County, passed away Friday, May 31, at his home.

Terence was born on Oct. 9, 1975, in Oak Ridge. He was a lifelong resident of this area.

He was a member of the Indian Bluff Baptist Church. Before his disability, he was employed as a residential builder.

James Ralph Nester, Jr.

James Ralph Nester, Jr., age 65, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Friday, May 24, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

James was born April 4, 1948, in Mount Airy, N.C. He lived in Winston/Salem, N.C., Charleston, S.C., and Roanoke, Va., before moving to Tennessee in 1995.

Before his retirement, he was employed as the auto sales manager at Clayton Automotive in Knoxville.
