Clarence was born February 4, 1967 in Perry County, Ohio.

Charles Eric Rains, age 55 of Oak Ridge, passed away on April 26 in Oak Ridge.

He was born to parents Charlotte Shorter Rains and Virgil Rains on April 8, 1959 in Mayfield, Kentucky.

He was a veteran with the U.S. Navy and worked as an electrician at various locations through the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers # 270.

Steve A. Duncan, age 63, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Sunday, April 27, at Methodist Medical Center.

Steve was born May 25, 1950, in Oliver Springs. He was a lifelong resident of this area.

Steve enlisted in to the United States Army four days following his 18th birthday. He served his country in Vietnam, receiving several military engagement medals, ribbons, and accommodations.

Following his military discharge, Steve returned home and became a underground coal miner, working for Oliver Springs Mining Company and D&D Coal Company. Before his disability, he was employed in the construction business as a heavy equipment operator at B&D and Jackson Excavating. [Read more…]

Obituary: Bertha Phillips Vanlandingham

Bertha Phillips Vanlandingham, age 98, passed away on the morning of April 27 at Briarcliff Health Care Center in Oak Ridge.

She was born February 8, 1916, in Pocahontas, Arkansas, and moved to Memphis, Tennessee, in the early 1930s, working as a baby sitter for a local doctor. In Memphis, she met and, in 1939, married her husband Alvin Otis Vanlandingham, an employee of the Illinois Central Railroad, beginning a 33-year marriage.

During the early 1940s, she began working at the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company plant in Memphis, a job she held until retiring after 36 years. In 1987, Bertha moved to Knoxville to be near her two sons and her grandchildren. [Read more…]

She was of the Baptist faith and was a member of Tuppertown Baptist Church. Shirley loved crocheting and spending time with her family.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Bryson and Lucille Pride; husband, Lonald Daugherty; sons, Lonald Joe and Lonald Jack Daugherty; brothers, Carl and Jim Pride, and Joe and his wife Diane Pride; and sister, Mildred Pride. [Read more…]

Agnes L. Justice, age 89, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014, at Briarcliff Health Care Center in Oak Ridge.

Mrs. Justice was born March 17, 1925, in New River. She and her family moved to Oliver Springs in 1951, where she has continued to live.

She was employed as a supply tech at both the Harriman Hospital and Methodist Medical Center, and before her retirement, she worked as a dispatcher at the Oak Ridge Public Transit System.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a member of the Kelly Town Baptist Church. [Read more…]

Mary Elizabeth “Billie” Monroe, age 66, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Thursday, April 24, 2014, at her home, while surrounded by her family.

Billie was born June 5, 1947 in Oliver Springs. She was a lifelong resident.

She was a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Billie was a practical joker who enjoyed laughter, spending time with her friends and family, singing gospel music, and cooking.

She was a faithful Christian and a member of the Mineral Springs Baptist Church. The love of singing continued throughout her life. While in high school in Oliver Springs, she sang in the high school chorus and she later sang in the church choir. [Read more…]

Bobbie Sue Walker Ragan

Bobbie Sue Walker Ragan went to be with The Lord from Methodist Medical Center on April 17, 2014. Having only recently moved to Oak Ridge to be near her children, she passed peacefully surrounded by her family.

Ms. Ragan was born on Nov. 4, 1928, in Morganton, N.C. She was the daughter of Wade and Sarah Walker and was married for more than four decades to J.D. Ragan, all of whom preceded her in death. Additionally, nine adult brothers and sisters also preceded her in death, along with one grandson, Lt. Weston Kissel of Minot Air Force Base, N.D.

She is survived by one brother, Wade H. Walker, Jr., of Merritt Island, Fla.; her son and daughter-in-law, John and Liz Ragan of Oak Ridge.; her daughter, Karen Ragan of Knoxville, her daughter and son-in-law, Cynthia and Will Kissel of Manchester, Tenn.; granddaughters, Amanda Ragan of Oak Ridge, and Ragan Osborne and her husband Jon, of Estill Springs, Tenn.; her grandson, Maj. Patrick Ragan and his wife Rachael of Las Vegas, Nev.; and a great-granddaughter, Rowan Ragan, also of Las Vegas, Nev. In addition to her immediate family, she is survived by dozens of nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews living all over the nation. [Read more…]

Garlis McGhee, age 82, a resident of the Batley Community in Anderson County, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014, at Methodist Medical Center.

Mr. McGhee was born on April 3, 1932, in New River.

In 1952, at the age of 20, he entered into the United States Navy and served his country during the Korean War. While serving, he received several medals, citations, commendations, and ribbons.

Following his military discharge in 1957, he moved to Dayton, Ohio, and lived in Dayton for 10 years, moving back to Coalfield in 1967. He then moved to the Batley Community in 1973, where he has continued to live. [Read more…]

Marilyn Rudo (nee Goldstein), passed away at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge on April 19, 2014, surrounded by her loving family.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Herbert Rudo; parents, Ida and Samuel Goldstein; and her son Robert.
