George E. Googe

Mr. George E. Googe, age 86, of Oliver Springs, passed away at his home on Tuesday, March 24.

He was born in Coalfield and was a member of Middle Creek Baptist Church. 

He was a disabled veteran, serving our country in the U.S. Army for six years. His unit, the 24th Infantry Division, was one of the first to be deployed to Korea. This unit had been retired, but has recently been re-activated in Fort Jackson, S.C. George was very proud of his military career and continued to support it by serving as a member of the VFW, Korean War Association, American Legion, and was a life member of the DAV and DAVA. Luther Stowe Lenderman

Luther “Stowe” Lenderman, age 85, of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday, March 24, at Shannondale Health Care Center.

He was born July 18, 1929, in Tellico Plains, the son of Luther Scott Lenderman and Elsie Tilley Lenderman.

Mr. Lenderman was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He retired from the Department of Energy, where he was an accountant. Mr. Lenderman was a member of the New Life Church of the Nazarene in Oak Ridge, where he sang in the choir and as a soloist. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially golf. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Clarence and Wayne Lenderman, and by sisters, Arietta Akins and Gertrude Carringer. [Read more…]

James Granville Johnston

Staff Sergeant James Granville Johnston, age 28, of Clarksville, formerly of Oak Ridge, passed on Sunday, March 15.

Jim was a 2004 Oak Ridge High School graduate, an Eagle Scout in Troop 328, and an avid hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman. He served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and was assigned to HHB 101st Division Artillery, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

He was admired and respected by family, friends, and fellow soldiers for his love of country, bravery and leadership, gentle nature, loyal friendship, and sense of humor. He exemplified the character of an Eagle Scout. Jim was passionately devoted to his wife Lacey. [Read more…]

Colleen Black died peacefully Thursday, March 19, 2015, surrounded by her family.

Born Mary Colleen Rowan in Nashville, Tennessee, on July 21, 1925, Colleen was the second of 10 children to James Leo and Bess Rowan. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1943.

Colleen and her entire family moved to Clinton Engineering Works (Oak Ridge) to help the war effort in 1944. Her life experiences in early Oak Ridge are documented in Denise Kiernan’s best seller “The Girls of Atomic City.” The book tells the exciting story of 19-year-old Colleen working for Ford, Bacon, and Davis as a leak detector at K-25. It was at K-25 that Colleen met a tall dark and handsome SED engineer—Clifford Black.

Colleen and Cliff were married at the Chapel on the Hill in November 1945. [Read more…]

He was born in Oak Ridge on April 20, 1955, to parents Vivian Loftis and Emogene Judd Brown.

Judd was a member of Kern Memorial United Methodist Church, was very active as an amateur radio operator “AB4DC,” enjoyed everything about nature, enjoyed his Boston terriers, and target shooting.

Dorothy “Dolly” Ballance Ebel, a long time resident of Oak Ridge, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 18, at Clarity Pointe of Knoxville, where she resided in the memory care unit.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Ebel, her brother Edwyn Ballance, her sister Mrs. Gwenith Thompson, and grandson Marcus Ebel.

Dorothy was born August 2, 1919, in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Ellen and Alfred Ballance. She was the eldest daughter in a family of four girls and one boy.

Dolly was born in the baby boom that followed World War I. Her father ran a neighborhood grocery store in south Minneapolis during an era when grocery stores were within walking distance of every house. Shopping for groceries was by pedestrians using wagons and carts, in contrast to the present era where shopping is done by cars and vans at mega stores. As a teen, Dorothy often worked in her father’s store.  [Read more…]

She was born in Jellico on April 18, 1923, to parents Newman and Georgia Lockard Bowlin.
