Paul Timothy Davis

Paul Timothy Davis, age 41, of Oak Ridge, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 23, at his home in his sleep.

He was a 1989 graduate of Oak Ridge High School and was employed with BWXT at the Y-12 plant. He enjoyed fishing.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marsha Lynn Pickard Davis, on June 26, 2010, and by his brother, Matthew Steven Davis.

Patricia “Pat” Lewis Paynter Rush

Patricia “Pat” Lewis Paynter Rush, known for her service in many civic endeavors including 14 years as a member of Oak Ridge City Council, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, at Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge following a short illness. She was 82.

Born Feb. 24, 1930, in Middlesboro, Ky., she was the daughter of Walker Burton and Helen Lewis Paynter, both now deceased. She graduated from Hollins College in Roanoke, Va., in 1952, with a bachelor of science degree in physics. She met her future husband, Richard M. Rush, while working as a laboratory assistant to his aunt at the University of Virginia. She and Mr. Rush were married on June 25, 1955, and moved to Oak Ridge shortly thereafter. Mr. Rush, a former member of the Oak Ridge Board of Education, died in 1996.

Mrs. Rush became very involved in Oak Ridge activities as a civic leader and volunteer. Soon after moving here she joined the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association Chorus and the choir at First Presbyterian Church and continued singing with both groups for many years. She also served as a member of the church session from 1981 to 1983, and on the board of directors of the Oak Ridge Civic Music Association.

In 1979, she joined Altrusa International, serving the local organization as president in 1984 and 1985 and also as District Four treasurer from 1989 to 1991.

Mrs. Rush’s proudest civic accomplishment, the family said, was being elected to City Council in 1987 and serving for 14 years. She had also been a member of numerous organizations and boards.

Julia is survived by husband, William Long of Lake City; son, Ty Harcourt of Lake City; daughters, Kaila Gunter of Moraine, Ohio, and Sadie Long of Lake City; sister, Nicole Dalton of Huber Heights, Ohio; grandchildren Kaylee and Kylie Burrell of Moraine, Ohio; and father, Marvin Harcourt of Dayton, Ohio, and mother, Laura Kaley of Huber Heights, OH. Edwin Harold Massey, age 74, formerly of Oak Ridge, died Jan. 17 at the Lafayette General Medical Center in Lafayette, La.

He was born June 26, 1938, in Cookeville, the son of Charles F. and Lindsey Apple Massey.

Mr. Massey was a 1956 graduate of Oak Ridge High School and served his country in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of New Life Church of the Nazarene. He was also an avid sports fan, and friends and family called him a “walking sport encyclopedia.” [Read more…]

Pauline ‘Polly’ Tate Varnadore

Pauline “Polly” Tate Varnadore, 85, was released from the bonds of earth to be welcomed into the arms of her heavenly Father on Jan. 19 at NHC Healthcare of Oak Ridge.

Polly was born Sept. 20, 1927, in Bemis, Tenn. She began working in Oak Ridge during World War II in a control room. During that time, she met the love of her life, a young sailor by the name of Ted Varnadore. The pair instantly fell in love and married three weeks later, a marriage that would last 67 years. Reba Russell Hahn

Reba Russell Hahn, age 84, a resident of Harriman, passed away Thursday, Jan. 17, at Harriman Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.

Mrs. Hahn was born Jan. 24, 1928, in the Oakdale Community of Morgan County. She lived in Oliver Springs and Harriman for most of her life.

Reba was a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a grandmother of 17 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. In her early years, she worked as a seamstress in the textile industry.

Mrs. Hahn was a member of Mt. Calvary Baptist church in Harriman.

Helen Virginia Sellers Brinker

Helen Virginia Sellers Brinker, age 81, formerly of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Jan. 10, at Summit View in Lake City.

She was born Nov. 30, 1931, near Wheat, Tenn., the daughter of William F. and Virginia Sellers.

Mrs. Brinker graduated from Fort Sanders School of Nursing and worked at Oak Ridge Hospital as an RN until she retired. She loved nursing, dogs, and the Atlanta Braves.

Frank Albert Heilman

Frank Albert Heilman was born on Oct. 8, 1915, in Canton, Ohio, the son of the Rev. J. Frank Heilman, D.D. and Kathleen Williford Heilman. He was the fourth child of that family.

He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Carlyne M. Heilman; their only son, F. Allan (Kathleen), of Belleair, Fla.; three grandchildren, Mark A. (Ann), of Carmel, Ind., John W. (Jillian), of Valrico, Fla., and Michael J. (Laura), of Princeton, N.J.; five great-grandchildren; and several nephews and nieces.

Luther M. ‘Ken’ Carroll

Luther M. “Ken” Carroll, age 89, a resident of Oliver Springs, died Wednesday, Jan. 16, at his home.

Mr. Carroll was born June 19, 1923, in Anderson County. He lived in the New River Community before moving to Oliver Springs in 1953.

He was a member of the Red Oak Baptist Church and a members of the Odd Fellows Lodge. Mr. Carroll was a retired coal miner who worked in the area coal mines until his retirement. Following his coal mining career, he worked in Oak Ridge at The Oak Ridger.
