James Bradley “J.B.” Mankin Jr.

James Bradley Mankin Jr., age 79, of Oak Ridge, passed away Feb. 4.

He was born Oct. 10, 1933, in Chattanooga and was preceded in death by his parents, James Bradley Mankin and Myrtle Lacy Mankin; his sister, Georgella Mankin; and his son, James Bradley Mankin, III.

Survivors are his wife of 53 years, Anne Howell Mankin; daughters, Cynthia Leigh (Jeff) Chaloux of Knoxville and Pamela Jane Harvey of Oak Ridge; grandchildren, D. J. (Lynn) Harvey, Amanda (Brian) King, Brandon Harvey, Alex, Paige and Spencer Chaloux; seven great-grandchildren; and sister, Becky (Merle) Van Vleet. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. James Aaron Foust

James Aaron Foust, age 20, of Harriman, passed away Sunday, Feb. 3, in Knoxville.

Aaron was born May 14, 1992, in Oak Ridge to Kevin and Cheri Foust. Aaron grew up in the Oak Ridge Church of God, where his grandfather J.C. Bandy pastored.

He was a graduate of Oliver Springs High School, where he was a four-year member of the football team. Aaron was awarded numerous awards during his football career: 2007 Best Defensive Lineman, 2008 Best Defensive Lineman, Best Offensive Lineman, All County Defensive Lineman, All Region Offensive Line, All Tri County Defensive Line, 2009 Best Defensive Lineman, Best Offensive Line, District 4-A All District Team, All Region Team, All County Team, All Tri County Team, and the WECO Ambulatory Care Center 2009 High School Football Lineman Award.

Aaron was attending Tennessee Tech in his junior year, majoring in environmental geology and was a member of the Sigma Pi Epsilon Fraternity.

Benny Francis Patterson, age 60, a resident of Cedar Bluff, Va., passed away Saturday, Feb. 2, at the Clinch Valley Medical Center in Richlands, Va.

Mr. Patterson was born Sept. 29, 1952, in Knoxville. He grew up and lived in the Moores Camp on New River in Anderson County until early adulthood, when the family moved to Oliver Springs in the 1970s. He moved to LaFollete in 1978, and continued to live there until his move to Cedar Bluff, Va., in 1994.

Mr. Patterson was a member of the United Mine Workers of America. He was a disabled underground coal miner, who worked for over 30 years in Virginia and Tennessee coal mines. He was last employed by Consol Energy in Virginia. [Read more…]

James Koontz, age 41, of Clinton, passed away Saturday, Feb. 2, at Fort Sanders Regional Hospital in Knoxville.

James lived for his girls and his wife Leann, who was his best friend since she was 15 years old.

He was a University of Tennessee football fan, and he loved the beach, camping, and fishing. He was a member of Second Baptist Church in Clinton. [Read more…]

Roger Dale Braden, age 62, a resident of the Frost Bottom Community, passed away Friday, Feb. 1, at his home.

Mr. Braden was born Feb. 17, 1950, in Oliver Springs. He was a lifelong resident of this area.

Roger worked as an auto parts store manager at Autowise Auto Part Store in Oak Ridge, at Mid State Auto Parts and Premier Automotive Color in Alcoa before his disability. [Read more…]

Ocie Evelyn Collins Wilson

Ocie Evelyn Collins Wilson, 93, of the Jonesville Community in Oliver Springs, died Wednesday, Jan. 30, at Methodist Medical Center after emergency surgery.

Evelyn was born April 11, 1919, in Campbell County to Joseph Uriah Collins and Emma Florence Ridenour. From age three, she was raised by her loving stepmother Martha Snodderly Collins.

Evelyn was the widow of Clarence C. Wilson, who died August 23, 1995. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her son Neil E. Wilson; daughter-in-law Theresa York-Wilson; four brothers, Homer, Hobert, Goebel, and James Virgil Collins; five sisters, Della Emma Collins, Goldie Collins Ridenour, Gertrude Sharpe, Lois Stokes, and Susan V. Mrs. Lawson was born July 1, 1948, in Anderson County. She is a lifelong resident of this area.

Joan was employed as a document librarian at U.S.E.C. of Oak Ridge.

William R. “Bill” Parton Jr., age 77, a resident of Lexington, S.C., and formerly of Oliver Springs, died Tuesday, Jan. 29, at his home.

Mr. Parton was born Sept. 22, 1935, in Anderson County. He graduated from the Oliver Springs High School in 1951, and following his high school graduation, he attended the Knoxville Business College.

Before his retirement in the mid-1980s, he was a well-known Oliver Springs business man who co-owned, with his father and brother, local coal strip-mining operations, Parton Coal Mining and Tri-County Mining Company. [Read more…]

Aline E. Messer, age 96, a resident of Harriman, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the Heart Of Georgia Hospice Center in Perry, Ga.

Mrs. Messer was born Aug. 1, 1916, in Decatur, Ala. She has lived in Tennessee since 1954.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother, a faithful Christian, and a member of the First Baptist Church in Oliver Springs.

Aline was preceded in death by her husband, Nathan L. Messer; by her parents, J.H. Eaton Sr. and Mattie Sandlin Eaton; by brothers, William Neal Eaton and J.H. “Sonny” Eaton; and by a sister, Audie Mae Woodruff. [Read more…]

Elma Claudine Basler, age 72, a resident of Harriman, went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at the Consultant Health Care Center in Chattanooga.

Mrs. Basler was born January 2, 1941 in Grenada, Miss. She moved to Harriman when she was 13 years old. She continued to live in Harriman until her move to Chattanooga.
