Children’s Museum summer camps continue in July

Imagination Station Summer Camp continues at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge through July, inviting children to experience garden to table fun, create with chocolate and other culinary treats, learn from the artistic masters, fashion designs in clay, and many more adventures.

The summer camps, through July 31, offer activities for children ages 3-5 in preschool classes and for children entering grades 1 through 7. Clay camps with professional clay artist Sherrie Carris will be offered throughout the summer for children ranging in age from 4-13.

The week-long camps are offered Monday through Friday each week. Fees for a single camp are $125 for members and $135 for non-members. For combo camps, morning and afternoon, fees are $210 for members and $220 for non-members. Payment may be made by phone with Visa, MasterCard or Discover, by check, or online through PayPal.

Children’s Museum hosts Wonderful Wednesdays

The Knoxville Opera will bring entertaining and popular selections from 20th century Broadway musicals and opera classics to the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge on Wonderful Wednesday, from 11 a.m.-noon June 17.

The museum will host special Wonderful Wednesday guests from 11 a.m.-noon Wednesdays during Imagination Station Summer Camp through July 31. Summer campers at the museum each week will participate, and the programs are free to the public with admission.

Imagination Station Summer Camp kicks off at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge Monday, June 8, inviting children to a wizard school, Jedi training, CSI adventures, painting and photography classes, cooking, and garden fun. Campers will have opportunities to learn about trains with model railroaders, to create with clay, to build with Minecraft Legos, and to explore cultures around the world.

The summer camps, through July 31, offer activities for children ages 3-5 in preschool classes and for children entering grades 1 through 7. Clay camps with professional clay artist Sherrie Carris will be offered throughout the summer for children ranging in age from 4-13.

New summer STEM Camp at Robertsville Middle School: Invention Project

Robertsville Middle School is offering Invention Project, a brand new STEM summer camp for rising sixth- to eighth-graders from June 8-12.

Invention Project builds on the great success of the Camp Invention STEM program last summer, a press release said. STEM is an acronym that means science, technology, engineering, and math, but it is also an interdisciplinary educational approach that blends these fields, which are deeply intertwined in the real world and in how students learn most effectively.

The Invention Project summer camp features a variety of entertaining and educational STEM challenges to engage the inventor, artist, and entrepreneur in each participant, the press release said. [Read more…]

Oak Ridge Schools hosts new Discovery Energy Camp this summer

This summer, Oak Ridge Schools will host the first Discovery Energy Camp for rising seventh- and eighth-grade students. This camp is open to students from Oak Ridge Schools or any other school as long as they meet the grade level requirement.

“Registration availability is limited, so please register soon!” a press release said.

During this camp, students will investigate how energy works and how small bursts of creativity can unlock huge potential for the future. This camp combines hands-on labs, engineering challenges, digital investigations, and more, the release said. It will be taught by Chris Layton, social studies teacher and STEM coach, and Chris Jaeger, Diversified Technology teacher, both from Jefferson Middle School. It will take place from 8 a.m.-2 p.m. from June 8-12 at Jefferson Middle School.

Girls softball camp in Oliver Springs on July 29-30

A two-day softball camp for girls ages 4-13 starts Monday, July 29, at Arrowhead Park in Oliver Springs.

The camp is scheduled from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Monday, July 29, and Tuesday, July 30. It costs $40.

The camp includes individual instruction on softball fundamentals, including throwing, catching, fielding, position play, offense, and base running, a press release said. All instruction will be age- and experience-appropriate. [Read more…]

Track Club has middle school cross country camp

The Oak Ridge Track Club Youth Athletics Program has a middle school cross country camp that starts July 29.

This camp at Robertsville Middle School is for athletes planning to compete in middle school cross country during the fall 2013 season. Athletes should be entering 6th, 7th, or 8th grades. All middle school runners are welcome, regardless of school affiliation, a press release said. [Read more…]

The summer camps, from June 10 through August 2, offer activities for children ages 3-5 in preschool classes and for children entering grades 1 through 7. Clay camps with professional clay artist Sherrie Carris will be offered throughout the summer for children ranging in age from 3-16.

The week-long camps are offered Monday through Friday each week, with no camps during the July 4 holiday week. Morning camps are from 9 a.m.-noon and afternoon camps are from 1-4 p.m. Preschool camps are mornings only. A free sack lunch and active play time are provided for campers staying all day. Preschool and clay camps offered at Children’s Museum

Preschoolers will be detectives, pirates, and international artists in Imagination Station Summer Camps at the Children’s Museum of Oak Ridge. Children of all ages will learn to create with clay, making nature-themed items, gifts for the holidays, and more during Clay Camps.

The Preschool Camps, from early June through August 2, offer activities for children ages 3-5 in morning sessions from 9 a.m. to noon. Clay Camps with professional clay artist Sherrie Carris will be offered throughout the summer for children ranging in age from 3-16.

Carris, the museum’s resident clay artist, owns and operates Carris Pottery with her husband Tom. She received her bachelor’s degree in fine arts from the University of Texas and her master’s and master’s in fine arts from the University of Iowa. She has more than 35 years’ experience as a clay artist.

The week-long camps are offered Monday through Friday, with no camps during the July 4 holiday week and no Clay Camps July 22-26. Morning camps are from 9 a.m.-noon and afternoon camps from 1-4 p.m. Each camp is specifically created with age-appropriate activities that are aligned with a child’s developmental stages. Continuous Threads has summer sewing camps

Continuous Threads Sewing Studio in Oak Ridge will offer summer sewing camps beginning June 10 and ending the week of July 29.

Sewing camps will meet daily from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Each week-long camp is designed for boys and girls ages nine and up who want to learn how to sew using hand sewing and machine techniques.
