Oak Ridge Tennis Club leadership changes

The Oak Ridge Tennis Club Board has announced that David Bowman is stepping down as president after several years of leadership.

Bowman has been instrumental in increasing youth participation in tennis and in restoring tournaments for youth and adults in Oak Ridge, according to a club release.

Friends of Haw Ridge proposes bike skills area on Edgemoor

Haw Ridge Bike Skills Area

Steve Dittner, president of Friends of Haw Ridge, talks about plans to build a bike skills area on unfinished soccer fields off Edgemoor Road in Oak Ridge.

A city board has recommended that horses be banned from Haw Ridge Park for now, and a nonprofit organization that helps maintain the park wants to build a bike skills area on an abandoned, unfinished soccer field off Edgemoor Road.

Friends of Haw Ridge expects to vote on a plan for the bike skills area on June 28, said Steve Dittner, the organization’s president. The plan could then be presented to the city.

Secret City Greenway runners raise money for park benches

Battle for the Secret City Greenway

About 175 athletes competed in a 4.2-mile fundraising run and walk on Melton Lake Greenway on Sunday morning.

The first annual Battle for the Secret City Greenway Run/Walk raised money for park benches on a recent extension of the trail, said Frank Chmielewicz, race director and former president of the Oak Ridge Track Club. It also raised awareness of the new 2.4-mile extension, which starts at the Edgemoor Road bridge over the Clinch River and ends at Solway Park East.

Battle for Secret City Greenway is Sunday

Proceeds from a new 4.2-mile greenway run and walk will be used to install benches on local trails.

The first annual Battle for the Secret City Greenway starts Sunday near the Oak Ridge Rowing Association Boathouse and ends at the west end of Haw Ridge Park.

Haw Ridge Park use policies discussed tonight

The quarterly “Meet the Board” meeting starts at 6 p.m. in the Civic Center Social Room.

Run for the Rose 5K part of Women’s Weekend

Run for the Rose

Stephanie Bruner of Maynardville wins the Run for the Rose Women's 5K in Oak Ridge on Saturday with a time of 21:25.6.

Fifty-two competitors signed up for the Run for the Rose Women’s 5K in Oak Ridge on Saturday.

It was part of Women’s Weekend in Oak Ridge. The weekend also included a Sunday morning Wild Rose Women’s Triathlon, which included a 300-meter swim, 10-mile bike ride, and three-mile run.

Women’s 5K run and triathlon this weekend

Women can compete in Oak Ridge this weekend in a 5K run and sprint triathlon.

The Run for the Rose Women’s 5K starts at 8 a.m. at the Grove Center Shopping Center. The Wild Rose Women’s Triathlon starts at 7:30 a.m. at the Oak Ridge Outdoor Pool and consists of a 300-meter swim, 10-mile bike ride, and three-mile run.

The events are part of Women’s Weekend in Oak Ridge.

Oak Ridge Outdoor Swimming Pool

Hundreds of swimmers enjoy the Oak Ridge Outdoor Pool on Providence Road on Memorial Day.

The Oak Ridge Outdoor Swimming Pool opened for the Memorial Day weekend, and it will open for the summer on June 2.

People streamed into the pool today, Memorial Day, seeking refuge from the hot sun on the holiday weekend. The pool is open until 6 p.m. today.

Golf tournament on Saturday benefits Boys and Girls Club

The Oak Ridge Country Club is hosting the Lawrence Hahn Golf Classic on Saturday starting at 1:30 p.m. This event is to benefit the Boys and Girls Club of Oak Ridge.

There will be longest and straightest drive contests, an awards dinner, $10,000 in gifts and prizes, and a chance to win $1 million, which will be split with the Boys and Girls Club, according to promotional materials for the event.

City announces road, dock closures

Oak Ridge officials have announced that they have temporarily closed the gravel road extension of Tuskegee Drive and plan to temporarily close the Gallaher Recreation Area boat ramp on Monday.

Coal Creek Jamboree continues this weekend

Coal Creek OHV is having a spring jamboree that started at 8 a.m. Thursday, April 19, and runs through Sunday, April 22. Numerous activities are scheduled, such as guided rides, a rock crawl and an ATV rodeo. A one-time $10 fee covers participation in all events except the Poker Run.

The Coal Creek Off-Highway Vehicle Area is 72,000 acres of off-road trails and is located in Oliver Springs. The trails are open to everyone and just about any type of vehicles, such as ATVs, motorcycles, mountain bikes and jeeps.

Bowl for Kids on Wednesday

Oak Ridge Bowling Center is hosting Bowl for Kids’ Sake on Wednesday, April 18, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Bowl for Kids’ Sake, which is presented by EdFinancial, is the largest annual fundraiser for Big Brothers Big Sisters of East Tennessee.

This fun event is for all ages to help ensure children have positive role models through Big Brothers Big Sisters.
