Harriet Clayton Davis

Harriet Clayton Davis, age 82, of Oak Ridge, went to her Heavenly Home on Jan. 14.

Mrs. Davis was born Feb. 3, 1930, in Person County, N.C., to the late Daniel A. and Caroline Swanson Clayton.

As well as being a homemaker, Mrs. Davis worked in child care. She especially enjoyed working at Daniel Arthur with special needs children.

She had an intense love and concern for animals. She fed birds, squirrels, and raccoons. She never hesitated to help an animal in need, and had several dogs and cats over the years as pets. She will be missed by her pets Blackie, Baby, and Lady.

Lupe Ruiz, age 80, of Lake City, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She dearly loved her grandchildren and being with her family. Lupe also enjoyed working outside with flowers. Lupe was a member of St. Therese Catholic Church of Clinton.

Mary Ruth Prater Holder, age 74, a resident of Powell, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 15, at Park West Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mrs. Holder was born Oct. 10, 1938, in Roane County. She moved to Powell in 1969.

Mary Ruth was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a faithful Christian and a member of the Mountain View Baptist Church in Lake City.

She retired from Allied Chemical as a seamstress following 17 years of employment.

She was 92 years old.

Michael Allen Brown, age 36, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Sunday, Jan. 13, in Oliver Springs.

Michael was born Oct. 13, 1976, in Knoxville. He lived in Florida and Pennsylvania before moving back to Oliver Springs.

Michael was a professional baseball pitcher who was drafted by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays before the team was franchised into major league baseball. While playing at Tampa Bay, the team was franchised, and the first pitch of the first game was signed by the entire team of the Devil Rays and the baseball is now archived in Cooperstown, in the Baseball Hall of Fame. He played for the Tampa Bay Rays for four years and later for the Pittsburgh Pirates for two years. Following a career-ending injury, he returned home and worked in auto sales at Toyota of Knoxville. Kathleen Carr Holbrook, age 84, of Clinton, went to be with the Lord on Jan. 9.

She was born on May 28, 1928, to the late Ezra and Anna Carr.

Kathleen was a member of South Clinton Baptist Church and was employed at Magnet Knitting Mills for 21 years. She enjoyed spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Kathleen is also preceded in death by her husband, Charles Arnold Holbrook; sisters, Gertrude McFarland, Gladys Eppard, and Martha Turner; and brother, Sherman Carr. [Read more…]

Claude Smith Harvey Jr.

Claude Smith (C.S.) Harvey Jr. was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on Jan. 12, 1931, and passed away at Methodist Medical Center on Thursday, Jan. 10.

He and his family moved to Oliver Springs when he was three years old, and they have lived there until the present time.

He was educated in the Roane County Schools through his graduation from Oliver Springs High School in 1948. It was there that he met and later married the love of his life, Jennie Maxine Brown Harvey. The two were married on Sept. 30, 1949. He opened Harvey’s Furniture and Appliance Company, which he operated for 64 years until his death.

Mr. Harvey dedicated much of his life to showing his faith in Christ by helping others and working in his church. He was a member of the Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church since 1952 and served as choir director and Sunday school teacher for over 50 years. He was also named as a lifetime deacon. He served as the church’s first youth director for over 20 years and helped in driving the senior citizens bus for many years. He was a man who genuinely lived his Christianity every day. Marjorie Ann Brown, age 67, a resident of the Marlow Community in Anderson County, passed away Thursday, Jan. 10, at her home.

Mrs. Brown was born July 4, 1945, in Oliver Springs. She was a lifelong resident of this area.

Marjorie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She was a faithful Christian and a member of Poplar Creek Baptist Church.

Before her retirement in 2006, she was employed at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge in the registration department for 17 years. [Read more…]

Mary Margaret Martin, age 80, of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Jan. 10, at Methodist Medical Center.

She was born Sept. 14, 1932, in Cumberland, Md., the daughter of Walter E. and Naomi Robinette Perdew.

Mrs. Martin retired from Methodist Medical Center, where she was a registered nurse. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church. She was an avid University of Tennessee Volunteers fan and enjoyed traveling, antiques, and keeping up with other nursing retirees, but most important to her were her family and friends.

Jimmie Lee Manis, 86, of Oak Ridge, passed away on Jan. 10 at Methodist Medical Center.

She was born on Nov. 6, 1926, in Brandon, Miss., to parents James Henry Sanders and Cornelia Akers Sanders.

Jimmie was a member of West Village Christian Church, which she dearly loved as well as dearly loving her family. She enjoyed quilting, reading, and travel.

She retired as a nurse, having worked for over 20 years at Methodist Medical Center and at Parkway Cardiology.

Kerry Trammell

Kerry Trammell, 56, of Oak Ridge, passed away suddenly at his home last week.

Kerry lived life generously, giving himself to many organizations and individuals. He was a longtime contributor to the Oak Ridge Breakfast Rotary, the Oak Ridge Chamber of Commerce, and countless other volunteer-community based groups. Kerry had recently become active in the emergency medical service, achieving wilderness first responder licensing and going on to become an emergency medical technician, utilizing those skills with a local rescue squad.

An avid and lifelong athlete, Kerry wrestled in high school, practiced karate early, and started running in the mid-1980s. He was locally and nationally known in the ultra-running community and was passionate about the sport and contributing as a participant, race director, and goodwill ambassador. Kerry literally ran thousands of miles in races from the East to West Coast with family members and friends.
