Donald Edward Key II, age 55, and a resident of Harriman, passed away Friday, Feb. 22, at his home.

Mr. Key was born March 12, 1957, in Harriman. He was a lifelong resident of this area.

Before his disability, he worked as a butcher at Anderson Hilltop Market.

Donald was a member of Mt. Pisgah Baptist Church. He enjoyed raising cattle, shooting firearms, and fishing.

Earnest Ronald ‘Pervy’ Mathes

Earnest Ronald “Pervy” Mathes, age 62, a resident Oliver Springs, passed away Friday, Feb. 22, at his home.

Mr. Mathes was born March 17, 1950, in Oak Ridge. He was a lifelong resident of this area.

He was a master plumber and before his disability he was employed as the water treatment plant operator for the city of Oak Ridge.

Earnest served his country in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. While serving, he received several medals, decorations, badges, and ribbons.

Dorothy Pearl Galloway

Dorothy Pearl Galloway, age 96, of Oak Ridge, departed this life peacefully on Feb. 21 at Greenfield of Oak Ridge.

She was a lifetime supporter and servant for the church of Christ and recently attended the New York Avenue Church of Christ in Oak Ridge.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Vernon Galloway and daughter, Vernita Smith.

Robert August Winkel

Robert August Winkel, 98, died on Friday, Feb. 22, at his home in Oak Ridge.

In 1950, Mr. Winkel moved to Paducah, Ky., to become the assistant manager of Union Carbide’s Gaseous Diffusion Plant. He ultimately became plant manager for the operation.

While living in Paducah, he was very active in the community, serving on the board of directors of the local Boy Scouts Council and Junior Achievement. He was also an active Rotarian and a member of Grace Episcopal Church. In addition, Mr. Winkel was a “Kentucky Colonel” and served on the Governor’s Committee on Educational Television.

In 1971, Mr. Winkel and his family moved to Oak Ridge when he became plant manager of K-25. He remained in the plant manager position until his retirement in December 1979.

Jack C. “Pappy” Ethridge

Jack C. “Pappy” Ethridge, age 76, a resident of Clinton, passed away Thursday, Feb. 21, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mr. Ethridge was born May 19, 1936, in Birmingham, Ala. He has lived in Clinton since 1965. Pappy was an avid outdoorsman and ATV Rider and the founder of the Windrock ATV Club. He was also a member of Atomic Lodge F&AM #756 in Oak Ridge.

Jack is preceded in death by his wife, Joanna Louise Ethridge; by a son, Jack Keith Ethridge; by parents, Charles and Jackie Gilham Ethridge; and by a brother, Frank Ethridge.

Margaret Ann Watson

Margaret Ann (Mallas) Watson, 93, passed away in Oak Ridge on Wednesday, Feb. 20.

Raised in Wisconsin, Mrs. Watson spent most of her adult life in Coconut Grove in (Miami) Florida, where she worked and raised her children. She loved music and crafts, was independent, health-conscious, and a free spirit who kept warm and devoted ties with her siblings.

She moved to Tennessee in 2006 to enjoy her final years living among four generations of her loving family.

Perry Gibson Hockaday, 80, went to his Heavenly Home on Feb. 14 from his Solway home after a long battle with multiple illnesses.

Perry was a member of Solway Baptist Church.

James L. Davis

James L. Davis, age 88, and a resident of Oak Ridge, died Thursday, Feb. 14, at Methodist Medical Center.

Mr. Davis was born on May 1, 1924, in the Fork Mountain Community in Anderson County. At the age of 17, (1942) during the height of World War II, he entered into the U.S. Navy and served his country until his retirement, at the Sanford, Fla., Naval Air Station, in 1964. During his career, he received several medals, citations, ribbons and accommodations, including the WWII Victory Medal.

Following his Navy retirement, he began employment at the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, in 1967. He continued working at the space center until his second retirement in 1989. After his final retirement, he enjoyed living half of the year in Crossville and half of the year in Florida, until his final move to Oak Ridge in 2008. [Read more…]
