Clyde Carson Bass

Rev. Clyde Carson Bass, age 81, a resident of Oliver Springs, went home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 16, at his home while surrounded by family and friends.

Rev. Bass was born July 2, 1931, in Campbell County. He has lived in Oliver Springs since his early childhood.

Before his retirement, he was employed at TVA, and he owned and operated Clyde’s Barber Shop in Oliver Springs for 17 years.

He was a faithful Christian and a member of the Mineral Springs Baptist Church. He served as the church pastor on three different occasions, and he also pastored the Vowel Mountain Baptist Church. [Read more…]

Verbeaner Mae Moore

Verbeaner Mae Moore, age 84, of Oak Ridge, passed away Thursday, May 16, at Summit View Nursing Home of Lake City.

She was born Dec. 10, 1928, in Winchester, Tenn., the daughter of William and Annie Burrow Caswell.

Mrs. Moore retired from Lockheed Martin, where she worked at the Y-12 plant for 30 years. She was a long-time member of Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, where she was active in the Abbie Vinson Circle, sang in the choir, and served as a Sunday School teacher. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, and gardening, and she loved children, but her passion was serving as a caregiver to anyone in need.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Noland Moore; sisters, Bernice Beatty and Dennis Strong; and brother, Reverdy Caswell. [Read more…]

Jerry Mack Giles, age 57, a resident of Oak Ridge, passed away Friday, May 17, at Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center in Knoxville.

Jerry was born November 25, 1955 in Oliver Springs. He was a loving son, brother, uncle and friend.

Mr. Giles is survived in death by two sisters and three brothers; Betty (Giles) Stewart and husband, Jim, of Oak Ridge, Patsy (Giles) Hensley and husband, Maurice, of Harriman, David Giles and wife, Etta, of Oliver Springs, Jimmy Giles and wife, Linda, of Oliver Springs and Steve Giles and wife, Anita, of Wartburg. John Trice Donald, age 80, of Oak Ridge, passed away Wednesday, May 15.

He was born Sept. 10, 1932, in Dorsey, Miss., the son of Audrey Lee and Luna Christian Donald.

Mr. Donald was a veteran of the Korean conflict, serving with the U.S. Army. He worked as a telephone installer. Mr. Donald was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. He was an avid fisherman.

Polly Wilson Williams

Polly Wilson Williams passed away on May 16 at Greenfield Assisted Living Facility in Oak Ridge.

She was born on March 9, 1923, in Sylva, N.C., the daughter of Luetta Buchanan Wilson and Thomas Oscar Wilson, both now deceased. She was named for her maternal grandmother, Cordelia Allen Buchanan, but when she was nine months old. her father started calling her “Polly.”

She was the sixth child in a family of eight, and she told wonderful stories of how her family worked hard to stay together after losing their father at a young age. Her hometown of Sylva, N.C. held a special place in her heart, and she enjoyed frequent visits there throughout her life.

She attended Western Carolina College in Cullowhee, N.C., and in February 1941, she was married to Claude C. “Red” Williams, from the nearby town of Bryson City, N.C. They moved to Oak Ridge in the early 1940s, where they lived until 1946. [Read more…]

Roxanne Callan Wylie, age 60, of Clinton, passed away Tuesday, May 14, at Methodist Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 30, 1952, in Rotan, Texas.

Mrs. Wylie retired as operations manager from the Knoxville Post Office Credit Union. She was an active member of the Clinton Church of Christ. Her main focus in life was her family and her grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Lee Wylie, and mother, Sarah Jane Callan. [Read more…]

Meredith Shamblin Jordan, age 87, of Oak Ridge, passed away Friday, May 10, at NHC Health Care Center.

She was born May 30, 1925, in Maryville, the daughter of William and Margaret Birchfiel Shamblin. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Allan Henry Jordan; sister, Edna Margaret King; and sister-in-law, Judy Shamblin.

She is survived by three children, William Allan Jordan, Thomas Andrew Jordan and wife Debbie, and Sarah Jordan Makin and husband Brad; three grandchildren and their spouses, Matt and Heather Jordan, Amy and Russ Hulme, and Sarah and Tommy Horan; three great-grandchildren, Gavin Jordan, and Luke and Lila Hulme; brothers, Crowder Shamblin and wife Geri, Vernon Shamblin, and Carl Shamblin; and several nieces and nephews. ‘Buzz’ Muckenthaler

Francis J. “Buzz” Muckenthaler, age 90, of Oak Ridge, died Sunday, May 12, at Tennova Inpatient Hospice in Knoxville.

He was born April 3, 1923, in Paxico, Kansas, the son of Raymond and Cecelia Meinhardt Muckenthaler.

He served in the U.S. Army Signal Corps from 1943 to 1946, after which he graduated from Rockhurst University and received a master’s degree in physics from the University of Kansas in 1949. That same year, he began employment with Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corporation in Oak Ridge. He transferred in 1951 to the Oak Ridge National Laboratory, from which he retired in 1993.

As a physicist, his research provided experimental data for the design and development of shielding systems for nuclear reactors. For this, he was honored for technical achievement by the American Nuclear Society. [Read more…]

Kathleen Lena Dunn Oden, age 88, a resident of Oliver Springs, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, May 11, at her home.

Mrs. Oden was born July 21, 1924, in Roane County. She was a lifelong resident of this area.

Before her retirement, she was employed as an inspector at both Roane Hosiery and Burlington Hosiery Mills for more than 38 years. Her hobbies included quilting, crocheting, canning and gardening.

She was a faithful Christian and a longtime member of Beech Park Baptist Church. [Read more…]

Scott Alan Rutherford, age 47, of Knoxville, passed away Friday, May 10, at his home of an apparent heart attack.

He was born Feb. 17, 1966, in Oak Ridge and was an 1984 graduate of Oak Ridge High School. Mr. Rutherford worked as an operations analyst at Westgate Resorts in Knoxville. He enjoyed music, photography, and animals.

Kimberly Pratt, age 44 of Heiskell, passed away late Friday, May 10, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

Kim loved her grandson, Easton.

Kim and her sister, Shelly, were cheerleaders at NAGAF, where Kim was the homecoming queen one year.

Among several jobs over the years, she was a mail carrier in Clinton, worked for Al Breneger Insurance Co., and was intelligent with computers.

When her children were young in school, she went to their ball games and other activities. [Read more…]
