Kellie Lynn Maiden, age 30, of Lake City, passed away suddenly on June 11 at her residence.

Kellie loved her children. She was compassionate and always was giving to others. Kellie enjoyed music and reading.

Pastor Tommy Hensley, age 70, a resident of Oliver Springs, went home to be with the Lord on Thursday, June 13, at Methodist Medical Center.

Pastor Hensley was born Nov. 16, 1942, in Harriman. He was a lifelong resident of this area.

Tommy was a well-known local pastor who loved the Lord, the Church, and his brothers and sisters in Christ. Preacher Hensley began his ministry at Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Decatur, Tenn. Following his service at Walnut Grove, he was the pastor at Childs Memorial Baptist Church in Harriman, the Petros Baptist Church in Petros, and the Kellytown Baptist Church in Oliver Springs, and he was currently serving for the second time as the pastor of Childs Memorial Baptist Church in Harriman for the past 10 years. Geraldine J. Jenkins, age 81, a resident of Harriman, passed away Thursday, June 13, at Tennova Residential Hospice in Knoxville.

Mrs. Jenkins was born Feb. 14, 1932, in the Fork mountain Community of Anderson County. Following her Lake City high school graduation in 1950, she moved to Harriman, where she has continued to live.

She began her employment in 1950 with Bell Telephone as a telephone operator, and she continued employment with the phone company until her retirement in 1984.

She attended Childs Memorial Baptist Church, and she was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. Her hobbies included needlework and making crafts. [Read more…]

Wendall Ray Thornton, age 46, of Heiskell passed away Monday, June 10, at Tennova-North Knoxville Medical Center.

Wendall loved spending most of his time with his nieces and nephews, to whom he was better known as Uncle “Doo-Da.” He will be dearly missed.

Wendall is preceded in death by his parents, William Riley and Dollie Rose Thornton, and sister Mable Ruth Thornton.

Wendall is survived by his son, Daniel Thornton, of Oak Ridge, daughters; Amber Lawson of Oak Ridge and Crystal Thornton of Clinton; brothers, Bill Thornton of Winter Haven, Fla., Larry and Tina Thornton of Briceville, Ben and Carolyn Thornton of Frost Bottom, and Gary and Brenda Thornton of Heiskell; grandchildren, Christian and Hunter; and special friends, Rose Ann Brown of Lake City and Ronnie Smiddy of Lake City. Hazel Mae Brown, age 86, of Oak Ridge, passed away Tuesday, June 11, at Briarcliff Health Care Center.

She was born May 18, 1927, in Speedwell, Tenn., the daughter of David J. and Mattie England Heck.

Mrs. Brown retired from Weigel’s Farm Store after 37 years of service. She attended Solway Baptist Church for many years. She was an avid gardener and loved canning. Her family was her passion in life, and she enjoyed being with family and participating in family activities.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Patton Brown, on April 10, 1991; son, Herbert David Brown, on Sept. 23, 2011; and sisters, Ethel Hall and Billie Byrd. [Read more…]

Thelma Olyne Kappelmann

Thelma Olyne Kappelmann, age 86, of Oak Ridge, died Monday, June 10, at Greenfield Senior Living.

She was born Dec. 25, 1926, in Nashville, the daughter of Robert Wheeler Poindexter and Jessie Lee Kerr Poindexter.

Mrs. Kappelmann came to Oak Ridge following her high school graduation and began working for Union Carbide Nuclear Corporation, where she was a secretary.

In 1949, she met her future husband, Frederick Albert Kappelmann Jr., and they married in October 1950. She worked for the Children’s Clinic of Oak Ridge and later returned to Union Carbide, from which she retired. [Read more…]

Virginia Frances Kenealy-Brunkhorst, age 93, and formerly of Oak Ridge, passed away Sunday, June 9, at Parkwest Medical Center in Knoxville.

She was born Feb. 10, 1920, in San Francisco, Calif., the daughter of James Edward Kenealy and Eva Gertrude Plunkett Kenealy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by daughter, June Elaine Carson Paulus, and granddaughter, Michele Anne Brunkhorst.

She is survived by son, Melvin W. Brunkhorst of Selma, Ore.; son-in-law, Rex Paulus of Clinton; grandchildren, Sarah Thompson and husband Adam, of Corryton, and Lisa Waltenspiel of Santa Rosa, Calif.; and great-grandson, Mitchell Waltenspiel of Santa Rosa, Calif. [Read more…]

Gregory Paul Giles

Gregory Paul Giles, of Oak Ridge, a beloved brother, uncle, and friend, left this life June 7. He passed away in his home. He was born May 12, 1959, and was 54 years old. He left us too soon and will be greatly missed.

Greg was a 1977 graduate of Oak Ridge High School and was a painter by trade. He was an avid Vols fan, a swimmer, runner, and animal lover.

Valerie was born Sept. 12, 1957, in Oak Ridge. She was a lifelong resident of Oliver Springs.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Melissa Frederick; by her mother, Ethel Thelma Seiber; by a brother, Ronald J. Seiber; and by a step-brother, Doyle Nelson.

Kathy was born on April 5, 1965, in Nashville. She was a lifelong resident of Oak Ridge.

She was a loving mother, grandmother, and sister, and she was a member of the Faith Promise Church in Oak Ridge.

Peggy Justice Gibson, age 66, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Friday, June 7, at her home.

Peggy was born Jan. 21, 1947, in the New River Community of Anderson County. She has lived in Oliver Springs since 1951.

She began her employment at the K-25 Federal Plant in October of 1975, and she continued working at K-25 until December 1981. She transferred to the Y-12 Plant in January of 1982, where she continued to work. She was very appreciative of the management and her co-workers at the Y-12 plant during her illness.

She enjoyed traveling, shopping, and spending time with family and friends. [Read more…]

Mary Elizabeth Sharp

Mary Elizabeth Sharp, 81, of Yalaha, Fla., and formerly Oak Ridge, was born March 15, 1932, in Johnson City and died May 23, in Yalaha.

Mrs. Sharp was a homemaker, and she loved to travel. She enjoyed many trips with her husband and her sisters. She organized many family reunions, as well as outings for friends to lunch, movies, and other social gatherings and was the “president” of the Oak Ridge Retail Therapy Group.

She was a member of the First Methodist Church of Oak Ridge and moved to Yalaha in 2006, where she attended the Yalaha Community Church. [Read more…]
