Dorothy Shultz Gibson of Oak Ridge passed away on July 10 at Methodist Medical Center.

Dorothy was born to parents Edward and Rosalia Spano Shultz on Nov. 29, 1931, in Brooklyn, N.Y.

She worked for Martin Marietta Energy Systems at the X-10 facility as a procurement specialist and was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Dorothy enjoyed all handicrafts especially knitting and crocheting.

Preceding her in death were her parents, Edward and Rosalia Spano Shultz; husband, Ralph Gibson; stepfather, Theodore Koch; brother, Edward Shultz; infant sister; and son-in-law, Jerry Seiber. [Read more…]

Arnold Paul Fish

Arnold Paul Fish, 87, of Moncks Corner, S.C., Army Air Corps Veteran of World War II, passed away at his home Monday morning, July 8.

Arnold was born Sept. 30, 1925, in Somerset, Ky., the son of Paul Arnold Fish and Ola Dickerson Fish.

Mr. Fish was a retired civil engineer with CSX Railroad (formerly L&N Railroad). He was a member of Moncks Corner United Methodist Church. Being very active in the Boy Scouts of America as a Scout, he later served as Scout Master for over 10 years. Arnold was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Award. [Read more…]

Edward Von Halle

Edward Von Halle, age 87 and an internationally known scientist, died peacefully in his sleep at his Oak Ridge home on July 5. He was active in the Oak Ridge community as well as a devoted husband and father.

Ed was born on June 30, 1926, in Brooklyn, N.Y., and spent his earliest years there. He won the Westinghouse Prize in high school and went on to study chemical engineering at Carnegie Institute of Technology. When war broke out, Ed was too young to volunteer and had to wait until 1944 to enlist. Ed was on the docks in California ready to be part of the mainland invasion of Japan when news of the atomic bomb brought the war to an end.

After the military, Ed returned to Carnegie Tech and completed his degree. Ed went on in later years to get his master’s degree from Bucknell in Lewisburg, Pa., and his doctorate from the University of Tennessee, all in chemical engineering.

In 1950, Ed moved to Oak Ridge, to work at K-25. In 1952, he married Elizabeth Sgourakis and started a family.

Ed Von Halle was an internationally renowned expert in the theory of isotope separation. His Ph.D. dissertation at the University of Tennessee was on the subject of separation of species by thermal diffusion, and his later contributions covered isotope separation by gaseous diffusion, gas centrifuge, and laser methods. Retired Col. Thomas J. Adkins passed away July 8.

Tom was born in Corbin, Ky., in 1932.

He was preceded in death by his parents Joe and Fanny Adkins, son John Scott, grandson John. Jr., and his brother Bill.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Barbara Vermillion Adkins, and sons Tommy (Cheryl) of Lexington Ky., Jimmy (Kendra) of Longwood, Fla., and Charley (Lisa) of Knoxville. He has seven grandchildren, Brooklyne, Rachelle, Caro Lynn, Charles, Kylie, James Keith, and Andrea; and four great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister Peggy Lyons McNabb (Robert).

Tom is a member of the Corbin Kentucky High School Athletic Hall of Fame. He is a former University of Kentucky football player coached by the late Paul “Bear” Bryant. He was a member of Kentucky’s 1950 Orange Bowl Team and the co-captain of the 1952 Cotton Bowl Team. He was selected to the All SEC football team. [Read more…]

Clydia Ophelia Hendren, age 88, of Oak Ridge, died unexpectedly Friday, July 5, at Methodist Medical Center.

She was born Oct. 5, 1924, in Campbell County, one of eight children born to Aaron T. and Florence Bailey Nelson.

Mrs. Hendren retired from the U.S. Department of Energy.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Julius Hendren, on Jan. 15, 2008, who was also a retiree of the Department of Energy. She and her husband were both longtime members of First Baptist Church of Oak Ridge. She had been active on many church committees and church activities. [Read more…]

Alene Benge, age 79, of Clinton, passed away Saturday, July 6, at Golden Living Center–Windwood in Clinton.

Alene was a beloved wife of the late Corbitt Benge and a loving mother to her children, Mary Ann and James. She enjoyed playing bingo, going on trips with her senior friends, and fishing.

Along with her husband, she is preceded in death by her parents, Ben and Nell Gilbert, and several brothers and sisters. [Read more…]

Mack Petty, age 89, of Clinton, passed away on Saturday, July 6, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

Mack was a member of the Clinton Church of Christ. He enjoyed fishing and hunting.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Thomas and Lucille Petty; first wife, Virginia A. Petty; brothers, Clinton Petty, Rayford Petty, Reavis Petty, and Jimmy Petty; and sister, Caroline Choate.

Mack is survived by wife, Delores Petty of Clinton; daughters, Brenda Jennings and husband Eddie of Clinton, Beverly Sparks and husband Thomas of Zirconia, N.C.; grandchildren, Robert Queener, Brian Atkerson, and Allen Jennings; great-grandchildren, Allie Jennings, Wesley Queener, Jordan Queener, and Johnny Clark; and a host of other relatives and friends. Sarah Elizabeth “Lizzie” Phillips, age 61, a resident of Oliver Springs, went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 7, at Methodist Medical Center.

Ms. Phillips was born April 11, 1952, in the New River Community of Anderson County. She continued living on New River until her move to Oliver Springs in 2002.

Elizabeth was a faithful Christian and a member of New Mountain View Baptist Church. She was a former member and worshiped at Rock Hill Baptist Church on New River for most of her life. She loved spending time with family and friends, attending worship service and singing.

Ms. Phillips was preceded in death by her parents, Bart Phillips and Opal Mae Graham Phillips, and by two brothers, Danny and Robert Phillips. [Read more…]

Patsy Louise Saffles

Patsy Louise Saffles, age 63, of Powell, passed away on Thursday, July 4, at her residence. Patsy loved spending time with her family, riding motorcycles, and quilting. Patsy was preceded in death by her parents, Lee and Sara Miller.

She is survived by husband of 44 years, William “Tommy” Saffles of Powell; sons, Junior Saffles and wife Wendy of Powell, Jason Saffles of Powell, and Matthew Saffles of Powell; and daughters, Sissy Hurst and husband Mark of Powell, and Stephanie Saffles of Powell.

Patsy’s family will receive her friends on Saturday, July 6, from 1-2 p.m. at Calvary Baptist Church in Powell, with her funeral service to follow at 2 p.m. with Rev. Ron Saffles officiating. Patsy’s interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that donations be made to the Gideons Northwest Chapter of Knoxville. Jones Mortuary in Clinton is in charge of all arrangements.

Rickey Allen Lively

Rickey Allen Lively, age 58, a resident of Powell, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, July 1, at Methodist Medical Center.

Rickey was born Nov. 7, 1954, in Harriman. He grew up and lived in Oliver Springs until his move to Powell in 1983.

Mr. Lively was a coal miner and a member of the Union Valley Baptist Church. Rickey loved people, and he never met a stranger. He enjoyed fishing, outdoor activities, and playing his guitar.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Ramsey Lively and Pauline Melton Lively; and by a brother, James Ramsey Lively. [Read more…]

Dale Burchfield, age 40, a resident of New River, went home to be with the Lord, Sunday, June 30.

Dale was born June 5, 1973, in Lake City. He was a lifelong resident of New River Community in Anderson County.

Dale was employed as a machinist/metal fabricator. He and his wife formerly owned and operated Oliver Springs Flower and Garden.

He was an accomplished musician who played several instruments. He spent countless hours playing, and he also played professionally. [Read more…]

Lavada Bacon Smith, age 91, of Oak Ridge, born June 28, 1921, passed away, Wednesday, June 19, at Tennova Residential Hospice.

Lavada and Dwight Smith have been residents of Oak Ridge since 1943 and among the earliest members of First Baptist Church.

Lavada was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight H. Smith; daughter, Linda Smith Thomas; parents, Clyde and Stella Bacon; and brothers, Charles and Paul Bacon. [Read more…]
