Obituary: Naomi Ruth ‘Mickey’ Baker

Naomi Ruth “Mickey” Baker, age 79, passed away Tuesday, June 24, 2014, at Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

Mickey was born April 4, 1935, in White County, Tennessee. At an early age, the family moved to the Fork Mountain Community in Anderson County. She later moved to Oliver Springs and graduated from the Oliver Springs High School in 1953. Following her high school graduation, she moved to Harriman, where she continued to live.

Mrs. Baker retired as a telephone operator from Bell/South following several years of employment.

She was a member of Mills Baptist Church in Harriman and her greatest enjoyment came from visiting with family and cooking. [Read more…]

Obituary: Thomas H. ‘Tom’ Howard

Thomas H. “Tom” Howard, age 81, a resident of Oliver Springs, went home to be with the Lord, Saturday, June 21, 2014, at his home, while surrounded by his family.

Mr. Howard was born April 14, 1933, in Darfork, Kentucky. At the age of 20, he enlisted into the United States Army, where he served our country for over 12 years. He was a crewman communication specialist and a expert rifleman sharpshooter (carbine). He was assigned to the Fourth Army in the 8th Artillery Division, and he served in the Korean war, receiving several medals, decorations, badges, ribbons, and citations.

Following his military discharge, he began employment with King Transport, hauling heavy equipment in 48 states and Canada. While working as a truck driver, he often served communion at truck stops for those away from home. At the age of 44, Tom began preaching the gospel. He preached in Kentucky and Ohio, primarily in the Lexington, Kentucky, area and he last preached for two years at Mt. Sterling, Kentucky.

Following his retirement, he moved to Oliver Springs, in 2002. His hobbies included fishing, bird watching, playing guitar, and listing to music. [Read more…]

June Ellen Freels Cox, born June 18, 1953, of Oak Ridge, passed away Tuesday, June 10, 2014, peacefully at her home. She would have been 61 on June 18. June Ellen was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend who will be sadly missed.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Lucille Freels; by her father, Berl Freels; and by her father-in-law, Luke Cox.

Mrs. Cox is survived by her husband, Mark Cox; by a son, Justin Cox; by daughters; Jennifer “Nicki” Cox and companion DeVon Williams, and Natalie Cox and companion Craig Vitatoe, all of Oak Ridge; by six sisters, Joyce Gaylor, Judy Sutton, Janet West, Julia Phillips, Joan Phillips, and Jennifer Lecornte; and by a brother, Doug Freels.

She is also survived by her mother-in-law, Christine Cox; by a sister-in-law, Teresa Gunter; by brothers-in-law, Luke E. Cox, and Jospeh Hale Cox; and by several nieces, nephews, and by a host of friends. [Read more…]

George Richard Katz

George Richard Katz, 66, of Knoxville, formerly of Oak Ridge, passed away on June 19, 2014.

George was born in Knoxville on February 29, 1948.

He graduated from Oak Ridge High School, Class of 1966, and was a former fireman with the City of Oak Ridge Fire Department. George enjoyed other career pursuits and worked many years as a long haul truck driver. After earning his degree in nursing, George practiced as an ICU RN at East Tennessee Children’s Hospital of Knoxville and eventually he supervised Home Health Care Facilities.

Affectionately known by most as simply “Pops,” he was loved by many and will be missed by all. [Read more…]

Lester Sawyer, age 94, formerly of Oak Ridge, passed away Monday, June 23, 2014, at Ben Atchley State Veterans Home in Knoxville, where he was a resident.

He was born November 16, 1919, in Fontana, North Carolina, the son of Albert T. Sawyer and Katherine Cable Sawyer.

Mr. Sawyer was a member of the Civilian Conversation Corp and a veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Navy. He retired from the U.S. Department of Energy, where he was an inspector with Quality Assurance. He was a longtime member of Central Baptist Church. Mr. Sawyer was an avid recreational walker, gardener, and hunter. He loved fishing throughout his life and passed this interest to his survivors. [Read more…]

Margery Ann Bolin, age 86, of Oak Ridge, passed away Monday, June 23, 2014, at the Methodist Medical Center of Oak Ridge.

She was born April 30, 1928, in North Vernon, Indiana, the daughter of Hobart and Alice Wagner Evans.

Mrs. Bolin attended Robertsville Baptist Church, where she was active in Sunday School and the New Beginnings group. She was a longtime member of the Oak Ridge Women’s Club and volunteer at the Methodist Medical Center. She enjoyed oil painting and has several pieces of her art hanging in her home.

In addition to her parents, she was a compassionate and loving caretaker of her husband, John K. Bolin, who died in 1999. [Read more…]

Mary Elizabeth White Nageotte, age 94 ½, passed away on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, at Methodist Medical Center.

She was born in Crawford County, Pennsylvania, on December 8, 1919, to John and Elizabeth White. Mary attended St. Mary’s Catholic Church, and was a member of the Oak Ridge Women’s Club and several bridge groups. She was also a volunteer at Methodist Medical Center for 29 years. She greatly enjoyed her social activities and the many friends she acquired over the years.

Preceding her in death were her husband John Mark Nageotte; her parents John and Elizabeth White; her stepfather Sam Mosca; brothers and sisters-in-law Adam and Rose White, Nick and Jane White, Dan and El Dora White, and John and Faye White; brothers Joe White and Henry White; and sisters and brothers-in-law Eleanor and Jack Hough, and Grace and DeWayne Scott. Sandra Lou Walker, age 67, of Oak Ridge, died Friday, June 27, 2014, at the Methodist Medical Center.

She was born December 16, 1946, in Oak Ridge, the daughter of Hubert Britton and Billie Hawkins Britton.

Mrs. Walker had worked at the Methodist Medical Center as a unit secretary for many years. Prior to that, she was the dental assistant for Dr. Glenn Greer for many years. She was involved with the Mommy To Mommy Program through the hospital and also was active with the Oak Ridge Women’s Club, and she was a longtime member of the Jaycette’s. She was a member of Glenwood Baptist Church. She enjoyed reading, traveling, and anything having to do with the outdoors and nature. She especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and family.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brother, Stephen Britton, and grandson, Nicholas Gibson. [Read more…]

Timothy Bradford “Brad” Perry

Timothy Bradford “Brad” Perry, age 43, a resident of Knoxville and formerly of Oliver Springs, passed away Thursday, June 19, 2014, at Turkey Creek Medical Center in Knoxville.

Brad was born February 6, 1971, in Oak Ridge. He grew up in Oliver Springs and graduated from the Oliver Springs High School in 1990. Following his high school graduation, he enlisted into the U.S. Army and began his military career at Ft. Knox, Kentucky, where he graduated Army Training, as a 19D Cav Scout. He was next stationed at the Downs Barracks in Fulda, Germany, for two years. He later served our country in Desert Storm and returned back to the U.S. in 1992, when he was assigned to the 844th Engineering Battalion as a truck driver, until 2003 when he was re-assigned as a 79V Army Reserve Career Counselor with the 4th battalion Army Reserve Careers Division.

Brad played football while he was a student at Oliver Springs High School, and he continued to be a football enthusiast throughout his life. GO VOLS! Additionally, he enjoyed riding his motorcycle, especially on memorial day on the Dragon. [Read more…]

Shirley Ann Goodman, age 74, a resident of Knoxville, passed away peacefully at her home on Thursday, June 12, 2014.

Mrs. Goodman was born August 15, 1940, in Oliver Springs and moved to Knoxville nearly 60 years ago following her marriage to her beloved husband Fred.

In addition to being a loyal wife and exceptional mother, Shirley was a sensitive and gentle caregiver to scores of elderly patients during her 20-year career as a certified nursing assistant. Years later, after she and her husband enjoyed many post-retirement trips, Shirley was again called to service by becoming a full-time caregiver to Fred.

Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Jackson King Rather and Elsie Hembree Rather; her beloved daughter Sherry Lee Goodman-Doig; and six brothers and sisters. [Read more…]

Helen was born March 16, 1935, in Oneida, Tennessee. At the age of 8, she moved to Oliver Springs, where she had continued to live.

She was employed at both Burlington and Kyser/Rith and later at Abba in Rockwood before her retirement in 1995. She enjoyed feeding birds, squirrels, and animals that came into her lawn. She was a member of Southwest Baptist Church of Kingston. [Read more…]
