Thomas Howard Gunter, age 48, a resident of Oak Ridge, passed away Tuesday, August 5, at his home.

Thomas was born November 15, 1965, in Conyers, Georgia.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Frances W. Kelley Gunter Smith.

Thomas is survived by his wife, Kristen Gunter of Oak Ridge; by a son, Christopher England of Atlanta; by a daughter, Trisha Nikole Gunter of Oak Ridge; by a grandson, Jaylen Daniel England; and by his father, Frederick Gunter of Atlanta. [Read more…]

China Breanna Goins, age 23, a resident of Harriman, passed away Monday, August 4, at Methodist Medical Center, in Oak Ridge.

China was born August 9, 1990, in Harriman. She was a lifelong resident of this area and she graduated from Oliver Springs High School in 2008.

She enjoyed spending time with her family, caring for children, her pets, and shopping.

China was preceded in death by her maternal grandparents, Arthur Lewis Blalock and Zella Goodman Blalock, and by her paternal grandfather, Richard McKinley Goins. [Read more…]

Lonnie B. “Rusty” Ward

Lonnie B. “Rusty” Ward, age 69, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Friday, August 1, 2014, at the Methodist Medical Center in Oak Ridge.

Mr. Ward was born July 23, 1945 on Windrock Mountain to the late Howard and Clara Roberson Ward.

Lonnie served his country in the United States Air Force with 21 years of service. Lonnie received his degree from the University of the Air Force.

He was also preceded in death by his first wife Cynthia Hodges Ward, and by sisters Sandra Jean Ward and Sylvia Jo Wallace. [Read more…]

Gregory Benvenuto, born December 6, 1958 in Monroe, Michigan, died Monday, July 28, at 6:30 a.m. in Oak Ridge.

Greg was an avid model car builder, artist, and music lover. He enjoyed building model cars, attending classic car shows and performances by his favorite musical groups.

Greg is survived by his sons, Nathan Daniel (30), Jacob Michael (28), Joshua Carl (23), Matthew James (21), and Jordan Anthony (12); siblings, David Benvenuto, and Joan Hicks; niece, Jenna Scott; and grandchildren, Hunter Hansen (7) and Elliott Benvenuto (3).

Services will be held Friday, August 8, at noon at St. Mary’s Church in Oak Ridge, with a luncheon to follow from 12:30-4 p.m. Those interested in attending, please RSVP by Tuesday, August 5, by calling Jake Benvenuto at (734) 693-4298. Also, ask Jake about discounted hotel rates.

Janice Gwen Bell

Gwen Bell, 73, wonderful mother and loving friend, has gone home to our Father in Heaven. She passed peacefully on July 29, 2014.

Gwen was born on January 15, 1941, in Oak Ridge, where she lived her life. She graduated from Oak Ridge High School in 1959 and attended East Tennessee State University.

She is survived by her two children, Kina G. Lambert of Alcoa, and Steven C. Bell of Seymour; sister Sadie Dyer of Macon, Georgia; and many nieces and grandchildren, who all loved her dearly.

Gwen’s family received friends at Martin Oak Ridge Funeral Home at 1017 Oak Ridge Turnpike from noon to 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, August 3. A private gravside service followed.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions for Gwen be donated to her favorite charity, The Wounded Warrior Project.

James E. Stansberry

James E. Stansberry, age 70, a resident of Clinton, passed away, Thursday, July 24, 2014, at the Turkey Creek Medical Center in Knoxville.

Mr. Stansberry was born November 24, 1943, in Lake City.

Following his high school graduation in Lake City, he moved to Washington, D.C., and began employment with the Federal Bureau of Investigation. He continued his employment with the F.B.I. until his move back to East Tennessee to continue his education. While attending East Tennessee State, he was employed at the Tri-City Regional Airport for Southern Airways.

Following college, he began employment with Roadway Express and worked for 32 years, retiring in 2000. He then began employment as a realtor with Heath Schuler Realty and later Southern Homes Realty. [Read more…]

Theresa was born August 30, 1956, in Oliver Springs. She lived in Gary, Indiana, for several years moving back to Oliver Springs, in 1994.

She was a homemaker who enjoyed crafts and flower gardening.

Mrs. Bridges was born September 15, 1925, in the Upper Camp of Windrock Mountain. She was a lifelong resident of this area.

Dorothy Jones Wilkinson

Dorothy Wilkinson, a resident of Greenfield of Oak Ridge, passed away Monday, July 28, surrounded by loving family. She was 88.

She was preceded in death by her parents Victor and Kate Jone;, husband Paul; sisters, Mary Helen (and husband Joe), Margaret (and husband Pat), and Maime (and husband Bill); brothers Willard Worth, Woodrow, and David (and Peg); and granddaughter Paige.

As outlined in Denise Kiernan’s “The Girls of Atomic City,” Dorothy Jones came from west Tennessee to the Secret City in 1944, where she met and married Paul Wilkinson. They shared 65 years of marriage before Paul’s passing in June 2010.

In addition to raising her four children, Dorothy volunteered for many activities and hobbies, including as leader of her Girl Scouts Troop, sang in Kern Memorial Methodist Church’s choir as well as with Sweet Adelines, worked in the Oak Ridge Hospital Gift Shop, The PInk Placebo, and The Oak Ridge Museum of Atomic Energy. She and Paul studied with Ethel Howell’s School of Ballroom Dancing and enjoyed many years cha cha’ing with their friends in YAGO (young adults growing old). She was a member of United Methodist Women, and shared a lifetime of good company with her girlfriends in bridge club. [Read more…]

William Dillard Campbell, age 56, of Lafollette, passed away Friday, July 25, at Tennova Lafollette Medical Center.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Bessie Campbell; sister, Evelyn McCulley; brothers, Chester, Lester, and George Campbell; and brother-in-law, Hershell Lovely.

Dillard owned Campbell Tree Service and enjoyed cleaning house, fishing, and boating. He had lots of friends and considered himself as a “good ole country boy who was good at heart and loved God and Jesus.” [Read more…]

Dennis Seiber, age 91, a resident of Oliver Springs, passed away Monday, July 28, at his home.

Mr. Seiber was born April 16, 1923, on the family farm in Oliver Springs. He was a lifelong resident of this area.

Dennis served his country bravely in the U.S. Army, during World War II, in the 136th infantry division, of the 6th army. He was a duty soldier and a expert marksman “M-1 Carbine.” When he returned home, he brought back both battle scars and a Purple Heart. Additionally, he received the Philippine Liberation Ribbon, for his service in both the battles of Leyte and Luzon Philippine Islands. He also received a combat infantry badge, the WW II Victory Medal, and several other medals and awards.  [Read more…]

Mrs. Cox was born February 21, 1930, in Roane County. She was a lifelong resident of this area.

She was a homemaker, a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed cooking, canning, and growing both vegetables and flowers.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Charles Gilmore and Minnie Cheeks Gilmore; by her husbands, Winfred Shoopman and Albert L. Cox; by a stepdaughter, Elessa Hatfield; by a grandson, Michael Brown; by great-grandchildren, Gage, Jackson, and Grayson Brown; by sisters, Mae Hobbs, Betty Sue Burris, and Stella Rose; by brothers, Bob Gilmore, Virgil Neeley, and Lawrence Neeley; and by a son-in-law, Billy Edmonds.
