Anna Katherine (Power) Brown

Anne Katherine (Power) Brown, passed away September 25, 2014, after a lengthy illness surrounded by her family and friends at Physicians Regional (formerly St. Mary’s) Hospital in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Born June 4th, 1950, she was predeceased by her father Chris J. Power and her mother, Virginia S. Power of Oak Ridge, TN and her husband William F. Brown of Knoxville, TN. Kathy attended St Mary’s School, Jefferson Jr. High School and Oak Ridge High School prior to attending Knoxville Business College.

She is survived by her brother, Chris J. Power IV and wife Sharon, her nephew Chris J. Power V and two great nieces, Lucy and Ruby Power of Oak Ridge.

Katherine was a loving sister and sister-in-law and friend to all who knew her. She was an avid Tennessee Volunteers and Tennessee Titans fan. She also enjoyed taking many spur of the moment road trips with her friends. [Read more…]

William “Bill” Bowen Luzader

William “Bill” Bowen Luzader Jr., 59, of Oak Ridge, passed away suddenly from complications of a stroke on September 25, 2014, at Ft. Sanders Regional.

He was born October 19, 1954, in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, to parents William Bowen Luzader Sr. and Betty Jane Harding Luzader.

Bill was managing owner of Docks N Stuff and owner of Quality Car Care for 38 years. He was a member of Kern Memorial United Methodist Church.

Bill’s passion was cowboy shooting re-enactments. He was a member of ORSA Outlaws, The Smoky Mountain Shootist Society, and SASS (Single Action Shooting Society).

He was also a car enthusiast since the age of 10, a NASCAR fan, and an avid sports fan of football, especially UT and Titans. [Read more…]

Lois Marie Hyde

Lois Marie Hyde, age 95, of Oak Ridge, passed away Tuesday, September 23, at Briarcliff Health Center in Oak Ridge.

She was born May 27, 1919, in Bryson City, North Carolina to parents Robert C. and Lula W. Wiggins. She graduated from Swain County High School in 1937.

Lois was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. Her loving and generous nature warmed the hearts of all who knew her. She and her husband, Clarence, and their children, moved to Oak Ridge in 1952 after living in North Carolina, Virginia, and New York.

Lois was a long-standing member of Central Baptist Church in Oak Ridge, where she had been a member since 1961. She worked in the nursery at the church for many years and was also active in Sunday School and the GoGetters group and made many lifelong friends there. [Read more…]

Anthony “Braxton” Anderson, age 29, born in Knoxville, Tennessee, passed away on September 21, 2014.

Braxton is survived by his parents, Gina and Mark Anderson; sister, Brittany Anderson; and brother, Chad Anderson.

He is the beloved first grandchild of Wayne and Sue Anderson, nephew of Suzette and Barry Byrd, Tim and Jan Anderson, and John and Tina Anderson.

Braxton is the fiancé of Becky Ramsey of St. Louis, Missouri.

Betty Hubbard, of Oak Ridge, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, September 21, 2014, surrounded by loved ones. She was 84 years old.

For many years, Betty operated a day care in her home and is affectionately known as “Grandmamma” by many who she helped raise.

Surviving to cherish her memory are her children: Glen (Karen) Hubbard of Delaware, Gene (Pam) Hubbard of Knoxville, and Angi (Eddie) Seiber of Oak Ridge; grandchildren, Ron (Renee) Hubbard, Dale (Julie) Hubbard and Madison Seiber, all of Oak Ridge, Tommy (Laura) Hubbard and Travis (Cassie Rose) Hubbard of Delaware, and Tina (Leon) Platt of South Carolina; and 10 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. Dorothy “Dot” Mae Northcutt

Dorothy “Dot” Mae Northcutt, 86, of Oak Ridge, passed away at home surrounded by her family on September 19, 2014.

She was born to parents Paul and Dovie Woodruff Marlar on October 18, 1927, in Burnsville, Mississippi.

Dot was a member of First United Methodist Church of Oak Ridge and a member of the Elks Lodge #1684 in Oak Ridge and had been an active member of the Oak Ridge Boat Club, where she had served as an officer. Before her declining health, she was active in Oak Ridge Women’s Club and was an avid University of Tennessee fan, attending many of the games.

She was preceded in death by her children, Theresa Gail Bingham and Gary Todd Northcutt, and by her sister, Vernell Marlar. [Read more…]

She was born June 22, 1938, to parents Lonnie Mason and Nancy Hodges.

Barbara moved to New York and lived and worked there for over 50 years. She was a bar manager for years, then she made the move to child care, where she worked until her health began to decline. [Read more…]

Elizabeth Smelley Ball, age 98, of Oak Ridge, died on September 13, 2014.

Libby was born October 29, 1916, in McRae, Georgia, the daughter of James Monroe Smelley and Delia Mae Agee. She is preceded in death by her parents and her beloved sister Osie.

Libby graduated in 1936 from Friendship High School in Crockett County, Tennessee.

She and her late husband of 52 years, John Calvin Ball (1988) moved to Oak Ridge in 1944.

Libby was a 70-year member of New York Avenue Church of Christ.

In addition to working at Modern Recapping, where she made lifelong friends, Libby enjoyed selling cosmetics at several of Oak Ridge’s earliest retail establishments, including Service Drug, Pine Valley Pharmacy, and Proffitt’s Department Store. [Read more…]

Rev. Everett Leon Holland, age 85, of Oak Ridge, Tennessee, went to be with the Lord on September 20, 2014, and was reunited with his wife, Mamie, of 41 years.

He was a licensed minister and involved in church ministry for 52 years. He began his ministry in 1962 in St. Louis, Missouri, and continued there until 1994. He then continued his ministerial work in Oak Ridge, where he moved after the passing of his wife. He ministerial accomplishments included evangelist, pastor, Bible teacher, Sunday school teacher, radio and television ministries, and author of numerous Bible tracts and several books.

Through the years, he was a licensed minister with several organizations including the Assemblies of the Lord Jesus Christ (ALJC), United Pentecostal Church International (UPCI), International Apostolic Fellowship (IAF), and Bible Way Church of Our Lord Jesus Christ World Wide (Incorporated). He also worked as a spray painter for the Hussmann Corporation in St. Louis from 1953 to 1993.

Mr. Holland was well-known for his Bible prophecy teaching, exceptional Biblical knowledge, quoting scriptures, his spiritual insights on topics, as well as his knowledge of Israel and Jewish history. He loved sharing the gospel with everyone he met. He also loved history, current events, and archaeology. Even at age 85, he had a sharp mind and could easily recite historical happenings and dates. Dr. Jerry Braunstein

Dr. Jerry Braunstein, age 91, passed away on Wednesday, September 17, 2014, in his Clinton, Tennessee, home.

He was born in New York, New York, on December 24, 1922, to the late Simon and Sarah Braunstein, who emigrated from the Ukraine. He grew up in Washington Heights with his brother, Herman Braunstein.

After attending Townsend Harris High School (Class of 1938) and City College of New York (Class of 1942), he worked on the Manhattan Project at Columbia University.

After World War II, he pursued graduate education at Wesleyan University. He was elected a fellow in Sigma Xi, the Science Research Society. In 1951, he received his Ph.D. in chemistry from Northwestern University in quantum chemistry. He was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Washington and then served as a professor at the University of Maine at Orono for twelve years.

Dr. Braunstein transitioned to a research position in physical chemistry at Oak Ridge National Laboratory; his research focused on thermodynamics and electrochemistry of molten salts. His group’s work led to two patents and about 100 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He was co-editor of a series of books, “Advances in Molten Salt Chemistry,” and was elected chair of a Gordon Research Conference on Molten Salts. He retired from Oak Ridge National Laboratory after over 23 years of service. [Read more…]

Hazel Smith

Hazel T. Smith, age 101, passed away on September 17, 2014.

Mrs. Smith was born in Knoxville, Tennessee, and worked for the U.S. government in Oak Ridge during the early 1940s. She moved to Nashville after World War II and was employed by the Tennessee Department of Employment Security for over 35 years, until her retirement.

Mrs. Smith was a member of Belle Meade United Methodist Church. She enjoyed traveling, exercising, playing cards, reading, knitting, and being with family and friends. She was truly a “people person.” Throughout her life, she loved all, forgave all, and was eternally optimistic, guided by her faith and her strong love of her beloved family. [Read more…]
