Obituary: William ‘Bob’ Brooks

Mr. William “Bob” Brooks, age 91, of Coalfield, passed away Monday, November 24, at Ben Atchley Veteran’s Home.

He lived in Coalfield until he was 17 years old, then went to Cleveland, Ohio, to work before enlisting in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in World War II. He was in the South Pacific for three years.

He married Daisy Kelly, and they lived in Dayton and Miamisburg, Ohio, for 12 years. They moved back to Coalfield, and Bob went into coal surface mining. He retired in 1989. [Read more…]

Ruby Bowling Cox, age 90 of Clinton, passed away on Saturday, November 22, at Methodist Medical Center.

Ruby’s family and friends will have a visitation on Tuesday, November 25, from 7 to 8 p.m., with her funeral service following at 8 p.m. in the chapel of Jones Mortuary. Ruby’s interment will be on Wednesday, November 25, at 11 a.m. at Sunset cemetery in Clinton.

Jones Mortuary in Clinton is in charge of all arrangements.

Norbert Thonnard

Norbert Thonnard, 71, of Oak Ridge, passed away peacefully, surrounded by his family, on Thursday, November 20, after a valiant battle with cancer.

Norbert was born in Berlin, Germany, on January 22, 1943, to the late Ernst and Constanza Thonnard. At age three, he moved with his parents and two sisters to Barenquilla, Colombia. His family immigrated to the United States when Norbert was 14. They lived in Tallahassee, Florida, and he attended Florida State University, where he met the love of life, Roslyn Oglesby.

Norbert received his PhD in physics from the University of Kentucky in 1970. He spent 13 years at the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism at the Carnegie Institution in Washington, D.C. In 1983, he and his family moved to Oak Ridge, where he worked at Atom Sciences Inc., a high-tech spin-off of Oak Ridge National Laboratory. He joined the faculty at the University of Tennessee in 1993 and founded the Institute for Rare Isotope Measurements. [Read more…]

Kim Tisdale, of Knoxville, went to the room that Jesus prepared for her on Friday, November 21, 2014.

Kim is a beloved child of God and disciple of Jesus. Kim’s devotion to God led her to give up her careers as a high school biology teacher and basketball coach nine years ago in order to raise her son Hunter and teach him in the ways he should go according to God’s word. Kim loved her family well and put God’s will for her life above all people and things.

Kim is survived by her son, Hunter; husband, Michael; dad and mom, John and Linda Hunter; great-aunt, Joy Davidson; and grandmother, Cicelia Hunter, among others. [Read more…]

Martha Lynn Waldrop Babb Bailey, age 65, a resident of the Marlow Community in Anderson County, passed away Thursday, November 20, 2014, at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Knoxville.

Martha was born January 20, 1949, in Knoxville, to the union of Rayburn Cole and Betty Lynn Melton Waldrop, who preceded her in death. She was a lifelong resident of Anderson County.

She was a clerical/office secretary at Brant Wald Surgical Inc., which was a business her father started. Martha had a great love of animals and was a member of several animal care groups. She also enjoyed gospel music and social media on her Facebook account. [Read more…]

Joseph Lee Tucker

Joseph Lee Tucker, age 69, a resident of Clinton, went home to his Heavenly Father, Saturday, November 22, 2014, surrounded by his loving wife, children, and grandchildren.

Joseph was born March 15, 1945, to the late Roman and Doretha Tucker in Tampa, Florida. He was a lifelong resident of Clinton.

Before his retirement, he was employed as a coal miner for 25 years, working primarily at Devonia Coal on New River.

He was a United States Army Veteran who served during the Vietnam War. While in service to our country, he received several medals, ribbons, citations, and commendations. His most important work on Earth was being vice president of Legacy Peer Group Service, Vet to Vet, in Tennessee. [Read more…]

Don Paul Williams, age 79, a resident of Coalfield, passed away Friday, November 21, 2014, at his home.

Mr. Williams was born December 23, 1934, in Caryville, Tennessee. He grew up and lived in Campbell County before moving to Clinton, where he continued to live until his move to Coalfield.

Don served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Korean War. While serving, he received several medals, ribbons, citations, and commendations.

Don was retired from Universal Management in Atlanta. He was previously employed at Fox Chevrolet in Oak Ridge. [Read more…]

Christena Lee Hasbrouck passed away quietly Monday, November 10, in her home in Oak Ridge.

She was born March 4, 1947, the daughter of Robert E. Bruggema and Mary V. (Poterack) Bruggema. She grew up in El Cajon, California, the eldest of seven children, and moved later in her life to Eastern Tennessee.

She was the loving mother to six children (Paula, Geoff, Jason, Ricky, Jenny, and Rachel). She was grandmother to 12 (Derrick, Toshia, Brandon, Ethan, Dylan, Jacob, Leann, Kattie, Maddie, Rylieanne, Seth, and Brynlee), and one great-grandson (Bronson). [Read more…]

Julia Veronica Carter, aged 96, a resident of Oak Ridge for the past 68 years, passed away in her sleep during the night of Saturday, November 8. Emeritus of Oak Ridge assisted living was her residence for the last three-plus years of her life.

Julia, the first of three daughters, most often referred to as Julie, was born on March 2, 1918, in Decatur, Illinois, to Sanford Joseph Thornton and Julia Cain Thornton. A life long Catholic, she graduated from St. Teresa’s parochial high school in 1936, and attended Millikin University, also in Decatur. Julie was the eldest of three sisters. Katherine and Jane, her siblings, preceded her in passing in 2005 and 2012 respectfully.

The tumult of World War II and a job opportunity with the atomic energy work in Oak Ridge brought her to Tennessee in 1946, the one and only relocation in her life. She married Robert Alfred Carter on September 29, 1947, and bore the first of her two children, a son, Charles Sanford Carter in August 1948. Charles’ birth was followed by that of a daughter, Julia Gabrielle Carter, in December 1953. The younger Julia, known as Judy, or Gabby, to some family members, was a special needs child and a lifelong joy to her parents, who were very active in the early days of the Daniel Arthur Education Center and Sheltered Workshop. Debbie L. Johnson, age 61, a resident of Oliver Springs and Knoxville, went to be with the Lord on Sunday night, November 9, at the University Of Tennessee Medical Center.

She was a faithful member of Batley Baptist Church. Debbie retired from Stat Medical Services Inc., where she served both as a nurse and office manager for many years.

Debbie was a loving mother, “granny,” sister, aunt, and friend to so many. She especially enjoyed her monthly luncheons with her siblings. Debbie also loved all animals, shopping, and cooking. [Read more…]

John Wilborn Lamb, age 82, of Oak Ridge, passed away Sunday, November 9, at his home.

He was born June 9, 1932, in Black Oak, Arkansas, the son of Mois and Oma Crane Lamb.

Mr. Lamb retired from the U.S. Army, where he served for 24 years and served two tours in Vietnam. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans.
