Lee Munz Jr.

Lee Munz Jr. was born in Houston, Texas, on December 17, 1958, to Lee Munz Sr. and Patricia Merriann Sheridan Green Munz. He died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Friday, March 20.

At age two, he attended the Speech and Hearing Center in the Houston Medical Center. At age five, he attended Houston’s Special Education program for hearing-impaired students. At age nine, he attended Magnolia School for Children with Learning Disabilities in New Orleans. When his family moved to Oak Ridge in 1969, he attended Daniel Arthur School and later was enrolled in Oak Ridge Schools, where he graduated in 1978.

He worked in a school-work vocational placement with the TVA Job Corps and attended Tennessee Vocational School at Smyrna, Tennessee, where he earned certification in Food Services and Custodial Maintenance. Lee worked part-time at The Soup Kitchen and at Boeing. He worked full-time for Lockheed Martin and Bechtel Jacobs from 1988 to 1998.  [Read more…]

Mr. Samuel Waller Nichols, age 90, of Oak Ridge, passed away on Monday, April 6, at Briarcliff Nursing Home.

He was born in Oliver Springs on August 8, 1924, to the late Alex and Kate (Watson) Nichols. He worked at X-10 as a calibration operator.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, April 11, at Anderson Memorial Gardens in Clinton, at 1 p.m.

Rev. Allen P. Osborne, age 71, of Powell, passed away Monday, April 6, at Physicians Regional Medical Center in Knoxville.

Allen was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who enjoyed spending his time with family and reading his Bible—while he also liked to hunt and fish.

Mack Arthur Davis, age 70, of Oak Ridge, passed away, surrounded by his loving family, Saturday, April, 4, at Methodist Medical Center.

He was born October 20, 1944 in Asbury, Tennessee, the son of Steve Edward Davis and Roxie Hazel Hamilton Davis.

Mack retired as a receiving clerk from Oak Ridge National Laboratory in 2007 after more than 40 years of service. He was an active and devoted member of Riverview Baptist Church in Claxton. [Read more…]

Samuel Evans Duncan Sr., age 73, of Knoxville, passed away Saturday, April 4, after a brief illness.

Sam was born in McMinnville, Tennessee, on October 14, 1941, to parents O.E. Duncan and Flossie Evans Duncan.

He married the love of his life, Maxine Tays, on December 30, 1961. Sam and Maxine spent most of their years living in Oak Ridge and Knoxville. Sam had only retired two years ago from many years of service at K-25 and Y-12 in Oak Ridge.  [Read more…]

Genesis Hawkins, better known as Genis, age 59, of Lake City, passed away Tuesday, March 24, at his home in Lake City.

Genis loved the Lord and was a member of Little Cove Baptist Church. He was an ordained minister for over 30 years and pastored several churches in the area during those years. Genis loved helping others, ginsenging, and being with friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Robin Hawkins; parents, Leroy and Leopal Hawkins; brother, David Hawkins; and sisters, Patsy Sandefur and Betty Hawkins. [Read more…]

Mr. Earwood was born June 17, 1968, in Ashville, North Carolina. He has lived in Anderson County for the past 24 years.

Barbara was born March 23, 1959, in Hazard, Kentucky, to Thomas H. and Lela Wells Howard.

Mr. George E. Googe, age 86, of Oliver Springs, passed away at his home on Tuesday, March 24.

He was born in Coalfield and was a member of Middle Creek Baptist Church. 

He was a disabled veteran, serving our country in the U.S. Army for six years. His unit, the 24th Infantry Division, was one of the first to be deployed to Korea. This unit had been retired, but has recently been re-activated in Fort Jackson, S.C. George was very proud of his military career and continued to support it by serving as a member of the VFW, Korean War Association, American Legion, and was a life member of the DAV and DAVA. Luther Stowe Lenderman

Luther “Stowe” Lenderman, age 85, of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday, March 24, at Shannondale Health Care Center.

He was born July 18, 1929, in Tellico Plains, the son of Luther Scott Lenderman and Elsie Tilley Lenderman.

Mr. Lenderman was a veteran serving in the U.S. Army. He retired from the Department of Energy, where he was an accountant. Mr. Lenderman was a member of the New Life Church of the Nazarene in Oak Ridge, where he sang in the choir and as a soloist. He enjoyed sports of all kinds, especially golf. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by brothers, Clarence and Wayne Lenderman, and by sisters, Arietta Akins and Gertrude Carringer. [Read more…]

Staff Sergeant James Granville Johnston, age 28, of Clarksville, formerly of Oak Ridge, passed on Sunday, March 15.

Jim was a 2004 Oak Ridge High School graduate, an Eagle Scout in Troop 328, and an avid hunter, fisherman, and outdoorsman. He served two tours of duty in Afghanistan and was assigned to HHB 101st Division Artillery, 101st Airborne Division, Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

He was admired and respected by family, friends, and fellow soldiers for his love of country, bravery and leadership, gentle nature, loyal friendship, and sense of humor. He exemplified the character of an Eagle Scout. Jim was passionately devoted to his wife Lacey. [Read more…]

Colleen Black died peacefully Thursday, March 19, 2015, surrounded by her family.

Born Mary Colleen Rowan in Nashville, Tennessee, on July 21, 1925, Colleen was the second of 10 children to James Leo and Bess Rowan. She graduated from Cathedral High School in 1943.

Colleen and her entire family moved to Clinton Engineering Works (Oak Ridge) to help the war effort in 1944. Her life experiences in early Oak Ridge are documented in Denise Kiernan’s best seller “The Girls of Atomic City.” The book tells the exciting story of 19-year-old Colleen working for Ford, Bacon, and Davis as a leak detector at K-25. It was at K-25 that Colleen met a tall dark and handsome SED engineer—Clifford Black.

Colleen and Cliff were married at the Chapel on the Hill in November 1945. [Read more…]
